Today marks the 80th anniversary of the Line Of Duty Death of Edgar C. Bair, a three year member of the Newton Fire Department.

On May 24, 1946, Ed was the driver of an apparatus that was responding to the report of a bridge fire along the Missouri Pacific Railroad when the apparatus hit loose sand and rolled on U.S. Highway 81. Ed sustained multiple injuries in the accident. He succumbed to those injuries and passed away on May 30, 1946.

This morning, the Newton Fire/EMS Honor Guard and C-Shift crews paid tribute to Ed and the sacrifice he made, insuring that his sacrifice is never forgotten.

Rest Easy, Ed.

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, we ask our community to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this day and remember those who gave everything for our freedom.

From all of us at Local 5590, thank you to our fallen heroes and the families who carry their legacy forward. 🇺🇸

Local 5590 is incredibly proud to recognize two members of Newton Fire/EMS! Firefighters Kyle Soldani and Tyler Gehring are NFEMS’s newest paramedics! Yesterday afternoon, we gathered at Hutchinson Community college to show our support for Kyle and Tyler as they received their paramedic pin, officially marking the completion of a major career milestone that started over 16 months ago. If paramedic school wasn’t hard enough, Kyle and Tyler maintained their regular 24/48 work schedule where they completed their duties around the firehouse and responded to emergencies when our citizens called 9-1-1. In addition to a wild work-school balance is the most important fact of all, Kyle and Tyler are both a husband and a dad and they both sacrificed time with their families to make sure they continue to provide top notch services when the bells go off. Congratulations, gentlemen! Your dedication to the citizens and the job is truly incredible! A job well done!

Newton Fire/EMS Department administration was also in attendance to show their support for Kyle and Tyler as they made their way across the stage. Paramedic school is a long and grueling journey. That journey is made a little easier knowing your Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Department Medical Director, and the rest of the Newton Fire/EMS family have your back through it all. That support is incalculable.

Additionally, your Newton Fire/EMS Honor Guard team had the privilege of Parading the Colors to kick off the pinning ceremony. That’s why some of the guys are wearing their extra fancy uniforms 😎 We sincerely appreciate the staff and faculty of the Hutchinson Community College Paramedic Program for inviting the Honor Guard to help with the ceremony.

Great work B-shift!

At approximately 8:15 this morning, B Shift responded to a structure fire in the 500 block of East 8th. Crews made a fast interior attack, keeping the fire confined to the room of origin and extinguishing it quickly.
We are happy to report no injuries to homeowners, pets, or firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation and crews are getting ready to clear the scene.

This past Wednesday, Local 5590 Executive Board members traveled to Topeka for the annual Legislative Reception hosted by the Kansas State Council of Firefighters. This event brought Locals from all over the state together with legislators to discuss current and future legislation and how it will affect first responders around the state.

Prior to the reception, L5590 Board members were presented our IAFF Charter, signifying our membership to the International Association of Fire Fighters. The IAFF represents nearly 365,000 firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and emergency dispatchers across the United States and Canada. Presented by IAFF 2nd District Vice President Mark Woolbright, this marks the beginning of a long and productive partnership with the IAFF and KSCFF. Pictured left to right are KSCFF Secretary Matt Schulte, KSCFF President Matt Jackson, L5590 Secretary Kyle Soldani, L5590 President Dillon Richardson, IAFF DVP Mark Woolbright, and L5590 Vice President Duane Helms.
