Congratulations, Chief! Enjoy your retirement.

Please join us in congratulating Chief Steve Roberson on his retirement after nearly 32 years of service to the Newton community. His principled leadership and dedication have made Newton a stronger, safer community. Congratulations, Chief!

Of note, Chief Roberson is our last remaining member hired by Newton Ambulance Department before it merged with Newton Fire to become Newton Fire/EMS in 1997. The end of an era.

We’re keeping our brothers and sister of Local 135 in our thoughts and prayers as they navigate the aftermath of a double fatality house fire. We also wish to extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the two victims.

We had a great time getting a large group together yesterday. L5590 was excited to provide dinner for Newton Fire/EMS members and their families. This is the first of many family gatherings we’re planning!

‼️COMMUNITY MEMBER SHOUTOUT‼️

Local 5590 would like to recognize an outstanding local business owner who came through when one of our crews found themselves really feelin’ the heat 🥵 and not the kind of heat that we train for. While untimely emergencies aren’t unfamiliar to us, this was an emergency that was best left to the pros. Enter Matthew Smith, owner of Cool Guy HVAC.

Matthew responded to an emergency service call from the Station 1 crew on the afternoon of July 5th when the AC in the station suddenly quit working. The temperature outside was over 90 and the temperature inside the station was quickly rising to match. In no time at all, Matthew identified the issue and made the necessary repairs to get our AC back up and running. Matthew, we can’t thank you enough for taking time away from your family on a holiday weekend to make sure our guys stay comfortable. You’re the man!

Local 5590 would like to wish everyone a safe and happy 250th Independence Day! If you’re partaking in the firework festivities, keep a reliable water source close by. When you’re all done for the night be sure to wet down all the debris and let it cool down before throwing it in your trash can. If you do all that but still need us, rest assured that B-Shift will take care of you!

Three members of Local 5590 represented the Newton Fire/EMS Honor Guard with pride and professionalism as they paraded The Colors for the opening ceremony of the 78th Annual Newton Mexican-American Athletic Club fast pitch softball tournament.

This evening, department members, family, and friends gathered at Station 3 to celebrate two of our members as they received their shield and badge, officially ending their time as “probies”. Firefighter/EMTs Ashton Castro and Noah Stevens were recognized for their hard work and dedication over the past year.

Local 5590 is incredibly proud of our members and we look forward to standing along side them as they progress through their careers. Well done, gentlemen!
