FabNewport operates FabLab at the Florence Gray Center in Newport, Rhode Island. With 11 years of service, FabNewport aims to help ensure youth have equitable access to opportunities, resources and relationships so they can thrive today, and in the future. FabNewport envisions a future where all youth possess the necessary skills, confidence, and commitment to make a positive impact on their communities and realize their future aspirations. We bridge the gap between youth and their positive visions through mentorship and year-round slate of activities and classes and throughout Newport County.

FabNewport was honored to receive the Noreen Stone Drexel Friendof Education Award from the Newport Public Education Foundation at their annual celebration on October 22. We were honored for our "commitment to hands-on learning in classrooms, after school programs, and community spaces across the city, and opening doors to internships, mentorships, and career pathways for Newport youth."

FabNewport learner, Serenity, shared in her acceptance speech. "This year, something changed deep down in my life. This school can bring so much to a child's life that is really amazing, and it's just really changed the way I think of school."

This should surprise no one.

Recently, RIDE and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) announced the findings of a new statistical review revealing a strong association between sustained participation in arts education and lower rates of chronic absenteeism among Rhode Island public school students. The study, Chronic Absenteeism and Arts Participation in Rhode Island Public Schools: A Statistical Review, found the strongest association among students with sustained, consistent participation in arts education rather than single-course enrollment, with attendance benefits especially notable among historically underserved student populations. When students have opportunities to explore their creativity, develop their talents, and connect with learning in meaningful ways, they are more likely to come to school and thrive. These findings suggest that consistent access to arts education may play an important role in helping students stay engaged in school.

At lunch with a small group of Rotary members, I asked what they noticed about children growing up in Newport. One of the first observations was that they don’t see children playing outside anymore. Then we talked about what children need to flourish—and something striking happened: no one mentioned school. The conversation naturally moved toward belonging, relationships, opportunity, freedom, and being part of a community. That left me wondering whether we’ve placed too much responsibility on schools for things that only a whole community can provide.
