FabNewport operates FabLab at the Florence Gray Center in Newport, Rhode Island. With 11 years of service, FabNewport aims to help ensure youth have equitable access to opportunities, resources and relationships so they can thrive today, and in the future. FabNewport envisions a future where all youth possess the necessary skills, confidence, and commitment to make a positive impact on their commu

nities and realize their future aspirations. We bridge the gap between youth and their positive visions through mentorship and year-round slate of activities and classes and throughout Newport County.

At lunch with a small group of Rotary members, I asked what they noticed about children growing up in Newport. One of the first observations was that they don’t see children playing outside anymore. Then we talked about what children need to flourish—and something striking happened: no one mentioned school. The conversation naturally moved toward belonging, relationships, opportunity, freedom, and being part of a community. That left me wondering whether we’ve placed too much responsibility on schools for things that only a whole community can provide.
