Today marks the halfway point of our first Peninsula camp session of the summer! ☀️ Session 1 with CHATS is an opportunity for our youth volunteers to connect with individuals on the autism spectrum while learning about the benefits of play, nature, sensory stations and equine therapy. 🐴🧡 In addition to supporting their CHATS buddies, youth gain hands-on experience with the horses and perform various barn duties. Stay tuned for more on our camp experience!

"Service isn't something I do — it's who I am."

Lexi Anderson has lived those words across 500 hours of service with YVCHR. Today, we're proud to honor her with the Ethic of Service Award — our highest recognition for volunteers who don't just show up, but show others what a servant heart looks like.

Having just graduated this week, Lexi has her sights on pursuing a veterinary degree. "During COVID, when everything went virtual, I spent hours making enrichment toys for animals at the Virginia Living Museum, and it weirdly grounded me. Even though the world felt heavy and disconnected, creating something that made an animal's day a little better reminded me why I care so much about this path. That project is one of the reasons I'm chasing large-animal veterinary medicine. I want to spend my life protecting animals that can't speak for themselves, and volunteering with YVC helped shape that path."

Lexi, you've made Hampton Roads better, and we are so proud of you. 🎉❤️

YVCHR had a blast at STEM Community Day, hosted by Newport News Public Schools and Christopher Newport University!🧪

Youth volunteers facilitated a hands-on water filtering activity, allowing participants to learn how storm runoff can be cleaned in nature by soaking, spreading and slowing dirty water as it travels to our lakes, rivers and oceans. 💧 They also shared information about YVC and promoted some of our environmentally-focused projects, such as waterway clean-ups and litter collection events. 🚮
