Flashback Friday: this is a 2003 Gulf Restoration Network (now Healthy Gulf) newsletter about how GRN, Louisiana Environmental Action Network and Holy Cross Association won a victory in court against the Army Corps dredging of the industrial canal and how they handled the dangerous waste that lives at the bottom of the canal. A legal victory in 2003 that still resonates today!

Check out this editorial in the paper with a small shout out. We are in solidarity with St Bernard Parish’s fight against the LIT terminal. “There will be nothing other than total gridlock and it will paralyze the entire community—this the destruction of what we call home.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released a new Report on the proposed Industrial Canal Lock Replacement Project. The 30‑Day Public Review Period runs from July 10 to August 10, 2026, (although our lawyer is requesting an extension) and this is our community’s chance to speak directly to the Corps about how this 14+ year construction plan would impact the Lower Ninth Ward and St. Bernard Parish.

We’re gathering on Monday, July 6, from 6–8pm at 5227 Chartres St., and we’d love for you to be there. As the fight against the Industrial Canal lock expansion gains momentum, we need to strengthen the core team that keeps us running and our community informed. We have so many new social media followers! If that is you, please come join us!

We’ll be talking about a few key roles and projects that will shape our next phase of action:
Social media support to amplify community voices and share real-time updates
Admin and organizational help to keep our volunteer-led work moving
Coordinated lobbying efforts in DC to push back against this harmful project
Plus other ways you can plug in and help protect our neighborhoods

Your experience, your energy, and your ideas matter. This work has always been community-powered, and this meeting is a chance to help steer where we go next.
