New York City is no stranger to Der Ring des Nibelungen, Richard’s Wagner’s epic operatic exploration of power, love, and fate. Some eight performances of the opera cycle have been staged at the Metropolitan Opera.

🎶 But now, thanks to the gift of arts consultant and philanthropist Thurmond Smithgall and the artistic resources of the Opernhaus Zürich, New York audiences will experience something new: a concert performance of the Ring cycle at Carnegie Hall.

“I think we all have a tremendous opportunity to think about how to solve problems in a way that uses an ecosystem lens to solve all these issues around the fragility of organizations, the fragility of intermediaries, and the fragility of the entire impact ecosystem,” Dedo Baranshamaje, Interim Executive Director, Segal Family Foundation.

As part of Myriad USA’s international giving webinar series, we were joined by the Gates Foundation and Segal Family Foundation, two of the few philanthropic institutions in West and Francophone Africa, for a candid, in-depth conversation about why they are investing in this region and what it takes to give effectively, including navigating language and culture, building trust with key partners, and structuring philanthropic capital for lasting impact.

African‑led organizations, driven by leaders closest to the challenges they address, remain chronically underfunded. They receive less than 2% of global philanthropic funding, with most funding directed to East Africa, leaving West and Francophone Africa as philanthropic deserts.

The session also featured:
Moderator: Kady Sylla, Director, Africa & Middle East, Myriad USA
Speaker: Niloufer Memon, Deputy Director, Gender Equality, Gates Foundation

As conflict continues to devastate Sudan’s healthcare system, Nubia Health is building a model of care rooted in dignity, resilience, and community leadership. Based in Wadi Halfa, now a critical refuge for families displaced by war, the organization is delivering lifesaving maternal and child healthcare where traditional systems have collapsed.

Through proactive door-to-door outreach, trained community health workers identify vulnerable patients early, provide in-home treatment, and connect families to rapid-access clinical care. This approach is not only saving lives today, but also creating the foundation for a stronger, locally led health system for the future.

Beyond immediate care, Nubia Health is investing in long-term impact through training, research, and education programs that empower healthcare workers across Sudan to lead community-based solutions. In one of the world’s most challenging humanitarian crises, Nubia Health demonstrates how locally driven healthcare can restore access, trust, and hope for entire communities.

“The Gates giving strategy is anchored in the belief that we should do what we are best positioned to do and partner on the rest,” said Niloufer Memon, Deputy Director of Gender Equality at the Gates Foundation.

African‑led organizations, driven by leaders closest to the challenges they address, remain chronically underfunded. They receive less than 2% of global philanthropic funding, with most funding directed to East Africa, leaving West and Francophone Africa as philanthropic deserts.

Yet, the region is not empty but rich in local innovation, leadership, and solutions.

🎤 In this conversation moderated by Kady Sylla, Director, Africa & Middle East, Myriad USA, alongside Dedo N. Baranshamaje, Interim Executive Director, Segal Family Foundation, and Niloufer Memon, Deputy Director, Gender Equality, Gates Foundation, we explore what it really takes to give effectively, including navigating language and culture, building trust with key partners, and structuring philanthropic capital for lasting impact.

For many countries, it’s a familiar problem: shrinking government funding that has left arts, cultural, and educational institutions struggling. For Japan, the challenge is no less daunting. However, leading institutions such as the Tokyo National Museum and Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai) are now taking steps to harness the private funding needed to support the country’s vibrant cultural life.

Our latest blog explores what this transition looks like and what it means for the future of Japan’s arts and culture sector.

But now, thanks to the gift of arts consultant and philanthropist Thurmond Smithgall and the artistic resources of the Zurich Opera House, New York audiences will experience something new: a concert performance of the Ring cycle at Carnegie Hall.

As a long-time Wagner enthusiast and member of the Bayreuth Festival’s board of trustees, founded to perform Wagner’s operas, he was naturally intrigued by Zurich Opera House’s plan to perform the Ring in New York.

“I was struck the first time I heard Wagner as a young clarinetist at the age of 12,” Smithgall explains. “Even though I didn’t understand its complexity, there was something very profound about it.”
