August is Appendix Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on this rare disease and the research needed to better understand it, detect it earlier, and develop more personalized treatments.

We are proud to announce 38 new research grants supporting Israeli scientists pursuing innovative approaches to cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

From AI and advanced imaging to liquid biopsy, genomics, microbiome research, immunotherapy, and precision medicine, these grants reflect the extraordinary breadth of cancer research across Israel.

Since 1975, ICRF has invested nearly $109 million in more than 3,000 cancer research grants, helping advance discoveries and improve patient care worldwide.

The Jerusalem Post today featured some of ICRF’s newest grant awards and the scientists behind the innovative research.

The story highlights three ICRF-funded researchers for the 2026-2027 funding cycle exploring critical challenges in cancer science:

Prof. Irit Ben-Aharon MD, PhD. of Rambam Health Care Campus and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology received an ICRF Research Professorship grant to investigate the short and long-term effects of chemotherapy during pregnancy on children’s health, including potential risks that may emerge later in life. This builds on years of previous ICRF support that helped advance her research.

Dr. Shira Landau-Levi of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology received an ICRF Career Development Award to explore the connection between heart disease and cancer using an innovative heart-and-cancer Organ-on-a-Chip model, advancing our understanding of how these diseases influence one another.

Dr. Ido Livneh of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Rambam Health Care Campus received an ICRF Project grant to uncover the “backup systems” that allow cancer cells to survive treatment, research that could reveal new strategies for preventing recurrence.

We are proud to support these researchers, and all of the ICRF grantees pursuing bold, trailblazing research that advances our understanding of cancer and brings us closer to better treatments and improved outcomes for patients worldwide.

Congratulations to ICRF International Scientific Council member and past grantee Prof. Howard Cedar of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on his latest research, published online in Nature Communications.

The study, funded in part by ICRF, reveals that aging does not occur uniformly across cells, offering important new insights into the biological processes that contribute to age-related diseases, including cancer, neurodegeneration, and immune dysfunction. This discovery represents a significant step forward in understanding the mechanisms of aging and could help inform future approaches to prevention and treatment.
