What if the way we fight poverty is part of what keeps it going? 💔
More than a century ago, someone documented just this, Jacob Riis, and exposed the harsh conditions of New York City’s tenements. Today in Muskogee, OK, the buildings and systems may look different, but the question remains: Are we truly ending poverty, or simply managing it? The Poverty Industrial Complex describes how systems can unintentionally reward ongoing need rather than lasting solutions. When success is measured by how many people are served instead of how many lives are changed, the focus can shift from transformation to maintaining the status quo.
At Gospel Rescue Mission OK, we believe people experiencing homelessness, addiction, and instability deserve more than temporary relief. They deserve the opportunity for real, lasting change. While emergency services are essential, we must also invest in the relationships, accountability, resources, and support that help people rebuild their lives. Success should be measured not by how many people remain in the system, but by how many people find a path out of it.
GRMOK is here for change. We believe in restoring dignity, breaking cycles, and helping people move toward lasting independence. It’s time to rethink how we address poverty and build systems that reward transformation, not continued crisis. Because every person deserves more than survival—they deserve the opportunity for a new beginning. ❤️
