What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, and How Could It Help with CRPS?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber where the pressure pushes oxygen into areas that may be oxygen deprived. This increased oxygen promotes healing, capillary growth, and proper function, and the increased oxygen levels can even help with tissue repair and rebuild.

Studies have shown that those who start hyperbaric oxygen therapy have improved pain and functional state of the affected limb. Data from those studies also suggest the sooner the therapy is started, the larger clinical effect the treatment has.

Many often experience lower levels of swelling and pain, an increased range of motion and strength in muscles, and an increase in quality of life.

Pros:
- May reduce or eliminate the need for pain medications
- No serious complications, confirming it as a safe treatment method
- Non-invasive

Cons:
- May be expensive
- Claustrophobia and fatigue
- Takes multiple sessions that could take weeks and last 1-2 hours at a time

All About Chair Yoga!
Today's movement and exercise topic is chair yoga, a form of traditional yoga. Like regular yoga, chair yoga promotes gentle stretching, movement, breathing, and weight-bearing exercises, but it's all from the comfort and safety of a chair.

Some CRPS Warriors find relief in yoga or chair yoga, in part due to the exercise benefits, but also due to the powerful mind-body connection achieved through breathing and meditation.

Benefits:
- Can be done seated, which may help CRPS Warriors who cannot stand or balance safely
- Promotes gentle stretching and movement, exercising the affected body part and helping with compensatory pain or stiffness on the non-affected side
- Incorporates breathing, medication, and mindfulness, which can help reduce pain intensity and associated stress

How to Access:
-Yoga studios, gyms, senior centers, and recreation departments offer chair yoga at various price points.
-If it's not available or too costly, try YouTube! There are many options online, and chair yoga can be done at home. All you need is a quiet room and a firm 4-legged chair.

Not everyone's life follows the plan of "normal" or "what everyone else goes through." Some of us have been diagnosed with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome), a rare disease/illness/condition, etc.; with no cure. Having something like CRPS can turn your whole world upside down and forces you to view everything differently. It leaves you at a crossroad, not knowing where to go next. Every day is a step into the unknown and learning to survive, to live again. So, give yourself grace today, Warriors. 🧡

When someone in our community shares that they are struggling, it is natural to want to fix it. But sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do for a fellow warrior is simply to listen. This month, let’s practice "Trauma-Informed Support." Listen without judgment. Validate their experience with "I believe you" and avoid offering unprompted advice unless they ask for it.

Remember, you don't have to navigate this journey in isolation. Our International Team of Ambassadors is here for you! If you need a listening ear or guidance, please reach out to us!
