Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber where the pressure pushes oxygen into areas that may be oxygen deprived. This increased oxygen promotes healing, capillary growth, and proper function, and the increased oxygen levels can even help with tissue repair and rebuild.
Studies have shown that those who start hyperbaric oxygen therapy have improved pain and functional state of the affected limb. Data from those studies also suggest the sooner the therapy is started, the larger clinical effect the treatment has.
Many often experience lower levels of swelling and pain, an increased range of motion and strength in muscles, and an increase in quality of life.
Pros:
- May reduce or eliminate the need for pain medications
- No serious complications, confirming it as a safe treatment method
- Non-invasive
Cons:
- May be expensive
- Claustrophobia and fatigue
- Takes multiple sessions that could take weeks and last 1-2 hours at a time
