Murray State University Amateur Radio Club

Murray State University Amateur Radio Club A group of community members dedicated to the advancement of amateur radio in Western Kentucky. Our general meeting location is handicap-accessible.

MSUARC is a non-commercial association of Murray State University students, faculty & staff, and other citizens interested in Amateur Radio, organized for the promotion of interest in Amateur Radio communication and experimentation and education, for the establishment of emergency communications in the event of disasters or other emergencies, for the advancement of the radio art and the public wel

fare, for the representation of the radio amateur in legislative matters, and for the maintenance of collegiality and a high standard of conduct. MSUARC is affiliated with the American Radio Relay League in the Kentucky Section of the Great Lakes Division. MSUARC is open to all persons interested in Amateur Radio, without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, or handicap. Other meetings and activities are handicap accessible by arrangement. MSUARC was founded in 1960. The university administration wanted to provide a place on campus that student hams could operate without the hazards of setting up equipment and antennas in their dorms. The club meets on the First Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM in the campus I & T Building room 237. Each monthly meeting usually includes presentations of general interest to attendees. At every meeting members are available to answer any question you or visitors might have about Amateur radio. Since MSUARC is a designated school club, there are two classes of membership:

Full - Applicant must be associated with Murray State University as Faculty, Staff, or an enrolled student, possesses an Amateur license, serve a 30- day apprenticeship as an Associate member, desire to participate actively in club activities, and must obtain majority approval by all active full members present at a regular meeting. Privileges: Key to station, use of station facilities and repeater to extent of license class, and full participation in club activities. Associate - Applicant must be interested in Amateur Radio and obtain majority approval by all active members present at a regular meeting. Privileges: Use of station facilities and repeater to extent of license class, and participation in club activities as desired. MSUARC operates with a full slate of officers as well as a Faculty Advisor who is selected jointly by Murray State University and the MSUARC. The Faculty Advisor aids and guides the club as expected by Murray State University. A Station Trustee is appointed by the Faculty Advisor and is responsible to the Federal Communications Commission for the correct and legal operation of the club station. Dues for individual membership are $15.00 per year. Dues for other ham radio licensed family members residing in the same household are an additional $5.00 per year each.

MEETING LOCATION CHANGE!

Our June 2nd meeting will convene in room IT-146 instead of the auditorium!

IT-146 in the basement of the Collins Industry & Technology building has been reserved for us. We have it for the June, July and August meetings. This is the room that the CERT quarterly meetings have been held in. For those who need directions: go into the Collins building and walk to the elevator, as usual. But go past the elevator and turn left at the hallway. Then turn right at the next hallway, and IT-146 is a few feet down on the right.

The monthly meeting will be tomorrow/Tuesday, May 5, at the Freed Curd Auditorium in the Martha Layne Collins Technology Building at 7pm. Bill, KJ4W, will give a presentation on tower climbing safety, and he is the expert! All meetings are open to the public.

Reminder, our Skywarn Storm Spotter class offered by US National Weather Service Paducah Kentucky is just a couple of weeks away. This is a great opportunity to learn about all types of weather phenomena and how to report them. Our local storm spotters are a vital part of getting timely warnings out to our community.

This class is free to attend, but registration is required.

The first meeting of 2026 for the MSU Amateur Radio Club is this Tuesday evening, January 6, at 7:00pm in the Freed Curd Auditorium. The program will be a recap of last June’s Field Day scores, which were published by the ARRL in December, and some discussion towards planning of next June’s Field Day operations.

2026 MSUARC membership dues will be collected. Dues are $15 per year, with additional members in the same household at $5 each. Dues are on a calendar year basis and may be paid anytime, but we ask that this be done by the April meeting.

A license exam session will be conducted after the meeting. Those planning to take an exam should bring their photo-ID (driver’s license is fine), FRN, and $14 for the exam fee (unless you are a student, in which case it’s only $5). Those wishing to take an upgrade exam should bring a paper copy of their current license.

The K4MSU crew was a hit last night! The crowd loved being able to say Merry Christmas (and a few other things) as we shared our radios along the parade route. The kids were so excited to talk on the radio but we were running too fast to get those photos! Thanks to Debbie and Denis, David W., Bill, Larry, and John for the decorations, and to Bill, Larry, John, and Donna for the cleanup. We are also thankful for Allison and her two elves who distributed our candy.

I captured almost everyone who made it to tonight’s Christmas party. It’s been a great year and we had a fun night!
