MBAS (alumni of Douglass, Carver, MTHS and MHS) is a non-profit organization established to promote and provide academic scholarships to minority graduating seniors of Murphysboro who have been accepted to a 2 year college or a 4 year university.

Well, the Murphysboro Black Alumni Society-MBAS is at it again! Besides handing out $4,000 dollars in scholarships this year, the MBAS donated a total of 300 school supplies (100 folders and 200 spiral notebooks) to support Idea Creative’s “Back to School Bash” on Saturday July 25th from 10 AM - 2 PM at 1214 Walnut Street Murphysboro

Not only will the students get a backpack with supplies, there will be free food and ice cream, an opportunity to shop in the clothing closet as well as dental exams.

The Murphysboro Black Alumni Society (MBAS) 2026 Scholarship Recipients Announcement

Thanks to the support and generosity of our alumni, members and community members like yourself, the MBAS has now awarded NOT THREE BUT FOUR $1,000 Scholarships to three outstanding 2026 graduating seniors from Murphysboro High School (MHS). The MBAS was honored to present our fourth $1000 Scholarship to Amir Williams on July 13th, 2026.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Amir William's Scholarship Application was submitted but not received in time for review by the Scholarship Committee prior to June 22nd, 2026. After review of this application, the committee had no other choice than to recognize this young man for his academic achievements, his musical talent exemplified by his many band awards while performing with the MHS Band or performing solo and his sports achievements.

Amir Williams graduated from MHS with a 3.9 average. He has been accepted to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale (SIU-C) and will be majoring in Psychology with specialization in Counseling. This young man now joins the ranks of our 2026 Scholarship recipients including:

Brayden Wilson, who graduated from MHS with a 4.0235 average on a 4.0 average scale. He has been accepted to the University of Illinois (U of I) for Cinematography and Creative Writing in the College of Liberal Arts. Brayden also received the $1,000 Mary McClure-McClease Memorial Scholarship in addition to his $1,000 MBAS Scholarship; and

Mariana Nelson who graduated from MHS with a 3.85 average. She will be attending Southern Illinois University (SIU-C) Diagnostic Medical Sonography Specialization program.

2026 Scholarship Recipients Announcement

Thanks to the support and generosity of our alumni, members and community members like yourself, the MBAS awarded three $1,000 scholarships to two outstanding 2026 graduating seniors from Murphysboro High School (MHS) this evening (June 22nd, 2026).

The recipients are:

Brayden Wilson, who graduated from MHS with a 4.0235 average on a 4.0 average scale. He has been accepted to the University of Illinois (U of I) for Cinematography and Creative Writing in the College of Liberal Arts; and

Mariana Nelson who graduated from MHS with a 3.85 average and will be attending Southern Illinois University (SIU-C) Diagnostic Medical Sonography Specialization program.

Additionally, Brayden Wilson also received the Mary McClease - McClure Memorial Scholarship based on his academic record, leadership ability(ies) and his commitment to be the change and to make a change in the world through creative writing and film.

These two individuals represent our future leaders and professionals. Our ability to continue this annual scholarship tradition rests solely on our fundraising events and the generosity of our alumni, members, sponsors and our community donors like yourself. Without this collaborative effort, our ability to assist future graduates in achieving and advancing their academic ambitions will be significantly diminished.

Dear Murphysboro Graduating Seniors,

We waited patiently to receive and review your scholarship applications by April 30th, 2026 and we only received one...

We now are writing to you with exciting news regarding a pivotal opportunity to support your post-secondary aspirations. The Murphysboro Black Alumni Society (MBAS) is deeply committed to fostering the academic and professional success of our community's minority youth, and we understand the challenges you may face as you navigate your educational journey beyond high school.

To ensure every eligible student has the chance to benefit, we are thrilled to announce an extension of the application deadline for the MBAS Scholarship. The final submission date for your comprehensive application is now Friday, May 15th, 2026.

We recognize that the admissions process can be lengthy, and many of you may still be awaiting formal acceptance letters from colleges, universities, or trade schools. Please do not let this hinder you in submitting your scholarship application. In an effort to be as inclusive as possible, “You are encouraged to submit your MBAS Scholarship Application even if you have not yet received an official acceptance letter”. Our aim is to provide support to students who are actively pursuing higher education, regardless of the timing of their institutional acceptance notifications.

This $1,000 scholarship is a tangible demonstration of our investment in your future. It is designed to alleviate some of the financial burden associated with continuing your education, empowering you to focus on your studies and achieve your full potential.

The MBAS continues to work diligently to continue the tradition of providing scholarships and educational opportunities for the “ Purpose of Education” to black alumni and minority students from the Murphysboro School District.

Our prior MBAS page was hacked and disabled, so a new page has begun... We've lost track of many members so please make sure to like and follow our page. We are in the last leg of our fundraising campaign for our scholarship fund for this academic year. Last year we were able to award three $1000 scholarships to: Gabryelle Davis majoring in Radiology SIU-C; Jakale Hill majoring in Education and Ministry at SIU-C; and Anika Ellis majoring in Radiology at Roosevelt University Schaumburg. We hope to give three $1000 academic scholarships to three eligible minority graduates from Murphysboro High School in June or July of 2026. The requirements for the MBAS scholarship is attached. Please feel free to share this information.
