🚨The City of Carbondale is urging residents to take immediate precautions as portions of the region have been upgraded to a High Risk for severe weather, with the rest of the area remaining in a Moderate Risk category. Officials are closely monitoring this prolonged, volatile, and potentially dangerous weather pattern and strongly encourage residents to complete their preparations and safety planning.

The approaching storm system is currently predicted to reach the Carbondale area around 6:00 p.m. this evening, Wednesday, April 2. While the exact severity and timing remains uncertain, residents should be vigilant and prepared for potentially hazardous conditions.

In response to the forecast, the City of Carbondale will open the basement of the Carbondale Civic Center (200 S. Illinois Ave.) as a public storm shelter beginning at 4:00 p.m. today. Residents seeking shelter are encouraged to arrive early and bring any necessary personal items. The Carbondale Civic Center will close once the emergency warnings are removed and the storm front moves through Carbondale. The Carbondale Warming Center (608 E. College Street) will also serve as a storm shelter starting today at 4:00 p.m. through tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.

Additionally, forecasts project historic levels of rainfall from tonight through Saturday. If these projections hold true, significant flooding is expected throughout the city. We are in a flood watch from 1:00 p.m. through Sunday morning. Residents are strongly advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions:

-Avoid driving through flooded areas- stop and turn around .

-Report weather-related issues – Use the See Click Fix platform to notify the City of any flooding, downed trees, or other storm-related hazards. https://www.explorecarbondale.com/415/Report-a-Concern Please be advised that this application is not to be used for emergencies. For urgent matters that require immediate attention, call 911. Call the Water and Sewer Hotline at 618-529-1731 for water main breaks and sewer stoppages.

-Stay informed – Follow updates from local emergency management and weather authorities .

The City of Carbondale is committed to ensuring public safety and will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve. Please monitor official channels for the latest information.
