Bloomington's Bicentennial Gateway Artwork Project Request

The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation and the Economic and Sustainable Development departments request qualifications from professional artists or artist teams to create a signature public artwork for the Bicentennial Gateway that celebrates the vibrancy, diversity, resilience, creativity and rich history that make Bloomington unique.

This project was initiated to create a strong sense of place and arrival at the city’s northern gateway entrance. Phase I of this project was the completion of the Bicentennial Gateway sign in 2024. Phase II is incorporating a public artwork on or around the sign that reflects the spirit of Bloomington. The sign is a standard, fixed marker that tells people that they have arrived, whereas the artwork's role is to tell them where they have arrived. The installation needs to express the character, creativity, and spirit that make Bloomington distinct.

Artists or artist teams will design, fabricate, and install permanent public artwork for the second phase of the city’s Bicentennial Gateway project. The artwork should inspire excitement and anticipation in visitors entering our community and stir a sense of pride and belonging in our residents. It might be abstract or representative. The budget for this project is $125,000 and the deadline for submission is December 4th, 2026. Professional artists and artist teams based in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, or Illinois are eligible to apply. We encourage all applicants to view the entire call and learn more about the project before submitting an application. All applications are to be submitted through our CiviForm Platform.

Students in grades 3–5 will explore the exciting world of 3D art & mixed media using a variety of materials and techniques, students will work in sculpture, painting, collage, and construction to create their own unique three-dimensional artwork.

Print & Journal: Gel Plate Printing + Mixed Media Session 2 -Wednesdays, 5-8pm, October 28-(no class Nov 25th) December 9

6 weeks, $170, 17+, Instructor: Merrionna Pierce,

Weeks 1–3: Handmade Journals & Collage-Explore handmade journals from start to finish. Create your own book while experimenting with collage techniques, layering, textures, and mixed media.

Weeks 4–6: Gel Plate Printing- Explore a variety of patterns, textures, and colorful designs. Experiment with layers, stencils, mark-making, and mixed media techniques to create unique prints that can be used for collage and journaling.

NWI Homeschool Art Classes- Acrylic Painting, K-2nd grade
Mondays, 10-12, 4 weeks, November 2-23rd, $80
Learn basic painting techniques, experiment with color mixing, explore different brushstrokes, and discover creative ways to use paint. Through engaging projects, students will develop foundational painting skills.

NWI Homeschool Art Classes- Ceramic Hand Building 3-5th grade
Mondays, 10-12, 4 weeks, November 2-23rd, $80
Hand building ceramics will teach students techniques such as pinch pots, coil building, slab construction, and adding texture and details as they learn to join, shape, and refine clay while creating functional ceramic pieces.

NWI Homeschool Art Classes- Printmaking 101, 6-8th grade
Mondays, 10-12, 4 weeks, November 2-23rd, $80
This introduction to printmaking will allow students to discover a variety of printmaking techniques. Student will experiment with different elements of design such as, line quality, texture, and shape, as well as, learning how to transfer their design onto paper.

NWI Homeschool Art Classes- 3D Art, 9-12th grade
Mondays, 10-12, 4 weeks, November 2-23rd, $80
Students will experiment with a variety of materials and techniques while exploring the elements of three-dimensional art, including form, texture, and balance. Throughout this four-week class, students will develop their creative ideas, discover new approaches to creating 3D artwork, and bring their ideas to life through hands-on projects.

Join visiting artists and co-curators Ishmael “Ish” Muhammad Nieves and Felix “Flex” Maldonado Jr., for an artist talk on the work of the Crazy IN Style Artists, and the exhibition currently on display at South Shore Arts.

Emerging in Northwest Indiana during the 1980's the Crazy IN Style Artists (CISA) transformed the visual language of graffiti into a lasting movement rooted in community, creativity, and self-expression. Inspired by the rise of New York graffiti while forging a distinctly Midwestern identity, the collective evolved from a network of young writers painting walls and rail corridors into one of the region's most influential artistic voices. Still Crazy: 40 Years of the Crazy IN style Artists celebrates tour decades of this remarkable history and the collective's enduring impact on contemporary art, public space, and cultural life.
