Missy Teats, our Immediate Past President and Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor of the Wapahani District, was the presenter at today's meeting. The 2026 Indiana District Convention will be held in Muncie on August 7-9. Our club will help host this event which will draw more than 200 Kiwanis members from all over Indiana to our fair city. Missy is organizing our members to put together an info table at the event and swag bags for all the conventioneers to take home. If you or your business would like to donate stickers, pens, brochures, magnets, wrapped candy, or other small items that showcase Muncie businesses or organizations, message us here. (We need approximately 200 of each item to stuff the bags.) Thank you!

Did you notice the beautiful American flags our members put on display at many businesses on Memorial Day? The Flag Project is a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club of Muncie and we appreciate the many businesses who sign up for the service. We place flags at their businesses on National holidays. The project helps our club and promotes civic pride on important holidays. Message us here if you would like to sign up or get more details. (Thank you to member Scott Metzler for taking these pics!)

Today we held our final BUG (Bring Up Grades) party for the third graders at Longfellow Elementary School, Muncie IN who made their goal to get better grades in reading and math . The Muncie Public Library Centennial Library hosted the party. The kids walked over with Principal Gerry Moore and Ernest Brown, Family Engagement Coordinator. We had pizza, fresh fruit, brownies, tiny cupcakes, and flavored fruit water for lunch.
The students got certificates and t-shirts. The Meijer Community Giving Program provided gift cards for us to create fun swag bags for the students that included pencils, crayons, notebooks, granola bars, and other snacks. A local bike shop provided two bikes to go to the top students, and one student was given the David Dixon Award for outstanding academic performance and good citizenship. The award honors the late David Dixon, our club member who led our local BUG program. Felicia Dixon, David's widow and current Chair of the BUG Committee, presented this special award!

Yesterday was our last BUG (Bring Up Grades) lunchtime session with the third graders at Longfellow Elementary School, Muncie IN. We meet with the students each week to review tricky reading words and to encourage them to bring up their grades in reading and math. Next week, we will have the final party of the year to celebrate the students who met their goals!

We really enjoyed today's meeting held at By Hand & Fork restaurant. One of our newest members, Duane Hoak, who has been a Kiwanis member in Anderson, Indiana for many years, connected us with our guest speaker, Kim Williams. Kim is the Vice President of Resource Development at the Heart of Indiana United Way. She is also a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE). We learned so much about the great work United Way is doing to address the many needs of the residents of the five counties served by the Heart of Indiana United Way. She told us many issues are inter-related and providing an umbrella of services to individuals can solve many issues such as child care, utility assistance, food insecurity, and early literacy. This approach lifts individuals and families up and puts them on a path to success! Thank you Kim. (The lectern photo shows Club President Bruce Qualls, Kim Williams, and Duane Hoak.)

As promised, here are more pictures from the Junior Honors Banquet held earlier this week. Member Felicia Dixon served as chairperson of the event, which honors and recognizes academic excellence among high school juniors. Keynote speaker was Rhonda Ward, Assistant Director of the Muncie Community Schools MACC and Director of Student and Community Success. Her speech was uplifting and encouraging for everyone in attendance. How encouraging was it? Ed Moran, a member in his nineties, thanked Rhonda for her presentation and told her he felt motivated to follow her seven steps for success! Chairperson Felicia thanked Rhonda Ward, Hazelwood Christian Church, the club members who helped at the event, Mancino's of Muncie , and the students, teachers, parents, and guests. She also recognized the late Darl Bookout, who oversaw the event for many years, for his legacy of leadership.
