On October 19, 1944, U.S. Army Private First Class Barney Fushimi Hajiro of Hawaii, a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, displayed extraordinary courage while fighting in France during World War II.

Despite repeated exposure to enemy fire, Hajiro continued fighting and later helped rescue the surrounded “Lost Battalion” in the Vosges Mountains. On October 29, he single-handedly destroyed two German machine-gun positions before being wounded. Despite being shot four times, he insisted that 40 other wounded soldiers be evacuated before him.

Initially awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Hajiro received the Medal of Honor in 2000 following a review of military service records.

His bravery and selflessness remain a lasting legacy of courage and sacrifice. 🇺🇸
