Eleven years ago today we lost Mark. I can’t wrap my head around that number. It can feel like I’m in the moment at any moment, still. But 11 years later? Yes, because grief is the price you pay for love, as my friend Connie shared with me and Kristen just yesterday. I’m paying that price but Mark’s life and his love, joy, and humor are worth it. Where are we 11 years later? I’ve moved and gotten married (love you, Sam ❤️), Morgan moved out and has sinced moved again. We’ve moved, not just our residences, but in our lives. We kept going. We didn’t move on, we moved forward. We drew strength from each other and our loved ones and dear friends. And today even though our grief can be crippling in an instant, we are surviving and thriving. And Mark’s legacy lives on in his Mark Kaylor Memorial Art Scholarship through TFEC. Thank you all for your continued love and support as we continue to pay the price of love with Mark’s love in our hearts. 💚

Coming soon — the Mark Kaylor Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Make a Mark for Mark Project is being converted to a permanent scholarship fund managed by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC). This scholarship is in honor of our son and brother, Mark Kaylor, who was a member of the Palmyra (Pennsylvania) High School’s Class of 2014. This annual scholarship is awarded to a senior pursuing higher education in the field of art or graphic design. Mark had a gift and a passion for art and was planning to attend an art school, but tragically took his life shortly before graduation. Art is all around us - not only on museum walls, but on our clothing, our televisions, in our cinemas, in graphic design, and in advertising. Art, media, fashion, design - all of these things enrich our lives with beauty, stimulate our imaginations, challenge our perceptions, illustrate our humanity, and serve as a window to a world of new perspectives. Art can inspire, educate, and be a force for change. It is our sincere hope that recipients achieve their dreams in an artistic field of endeavor in honor of Mark.

Greetings from Mark’s mom. This is one of my favorite pictures from his graduation photo session. He looks very serious, but it was intentional. There are plenty in that photo shoot where he flashed his handsome smile. This shot, with the setting sun at his back, is spectacular. As today is unbelievably 10 years since we lost him, I wanted to take a moment to be thankful for the 17 years we had with him and all of the good memories we made. I know a number of parents who were not as fortunate, and my heart goes out to them this holiday season and always.

I know Morgan has a ton of his own memories, many moments with the three of us, and many with just two siblings hanging out and enjoying each other’s company, sometimes dealing with very difficult circumstances but always sticking together having each other’s backs.

I think it’s important to express gratitude in the midst of grief … to give a different perspective to the sobering reality of his absence. He is physically absent in that our earthly eyes can’t see him, but the inner eye of our hearts perceives his presence in our daily lives. And so, I am thankful for the time we had together and I’m thankful for his gentle reminders that he’s still very near. I’m grateful for the lessons learned, the growth achieved, and the inspiration for my days. I’m learning to let go of what I thought my life would be like and find my joy in the here and now.

I ask you in memory of Mark to be thankful for your life, to find your joy, and to help others do the same. 💚

Today is the 9th anniversary of the day Mark took his life. If you knew him, take a moment today to relive a good memory of him and smile or laugh. That’s what he would want you to do — no tears, just joy in the remembering. If you didn’t know him, please do something nice for someone else today - a perfect stranger or a loved one - that makes them feel loved and cared for. Mark was all about helping and caring for people, and that included making them laugh. Let’s Make a Mark for Mark today in our own little corner of the world. 💚
