08/03/26 -UPDATE: Tonight's Museum Meeting CANCELED!

Just a quick heads-up for our members and friends: our monthly Mount Jackson Museum meeting scheduled for this evening has been canceled. Town Hall is currently being set up for primary voting, so we are pressing pause for tonight to let democracy take center stage!

Don't worry, though—we’ll be back at it soon. Because of the Labor Day holiday next month, our next meeting will take place on the second Monday, September 14, at 7:00 PM.

We have so much exciting work happening behind the scenes to preserve, celebrate, and share our town's incredible history, and we can't wait to catch you all up in September.

One last moment at the Burkett Building 📸

They say buildings have memories, and for nearly thirty years, the Burkett Building has held so many of ours.

Our journey here began in the spring of 1997, when a handful of passionate citizens decided our town’s history deserved a home. On September 27th of that year, the ribbon was cut right here on King Street. While the museum grew and moved to its current location in Town Hall in 2003, this building remained a vital part of our footprint, serving as a cherished annex and a bridge to our past for nearly three decades.

As many of you know, the building has recently been purchased, and it is set to come back online as a vibrant commercial space. While we are sad to close this chapter, we are genuinely excited to see this landmark continued to be occupied, helping to keep our downtown heart beating strong.

As we finish packing the last of our collections and prepare to hand over the keys to the new owners, we realized we couldn't just turn off the lights and walk away without one final gathering.

If you remember the days of the original Burkett’s Grocery, if you were there for our 1997 opening, or if you’ve been a volunteer, supporter, or champion of the museum over the years, we would love to have you join us tomorrow.

Mount Jackson Museum Monthly Meeting Reminder! The summer season is in full swing, and things are moving fast at the Museum as we continue our work to preserve, celebrate, and share our town’s incredible history. We'd love to have you join us for our July meeting. Here’s a sneak peek of what we’ll be covering:

THE BIG MOVE: The Burkett’s Committee will be sharing critical updates on our collection transition. From coordinating the pickup of the loom and shoe shop pieces to finalizing storage plans for the print shop and setting a date for a group photo at the space, we are making progress.

BOOK COMMITTEE UPDATES: We are thrilled to discuss the recent Northern Virginia Daily article highlighting 200 years of Mount Jackson history! Plus, we have updates on our reordered book inventory.

UPCOMING STORYTELLER: We are excited to announce that Barb Pifer will be joining us in August to share stories of the historic Burkett’s Store.

We are so incredibly proud to share this recent feature from the Northern Virginia Daily, nvdaily.com highlighting a project that has truly become a labor of love. What started as a simple idea to commemorate our town’s bicentennial, blossomed into a beautiful, 550-page exploration of our shared home: "Mount Jackson, Virginia: Celebrating 200 Years of History."

This book is so much more than just paper and ink—it’s a collection of the people, businesses, industries, and landmarks that have shaped our community over the last two centuries.

We want to send a heartfelt thank you to the Northern Virginia Daily for taking the time to cover this story and helping us share this journey with our neighbors. We also love this photo of Kenna and Ann! :)

Most importantly, we are overflowing with gratitude for our amazing volunteers and the many community members who poured their time, stories, and photographs into these pages. None of this would have been possible without your passion and dedication to preserving our local heritage. You’ve truly created something special for generations to come!

What began as a project to commemorate Mount Jackson's bicentennial in January grew into a comprehensive exploration of the town's past in a new book titled "Mount Jackson, Virginia: Celebrating 200 Years of History." Produced by the Mount Jackson Museum book committee, the 550-page book documents the town's people, businesses, industries and landmarks through hundreds of photographs and historical accounts.

The Mount Jackson Museum team is thrilled to see our neighbors in the Town of Woodstock, Virginia bringing our region’s history to life today for the Shenandoah County Celebrates 1776 event.

For those of us who spend our days dedicated to preserving the stories of the past, seeing this level of passion for our shared heritage is truly inspiring. From the Revolutionary War encampments to the artisans and historians sharing their craft, today is a fantastic opportunity to see the history we love so much outside of the museum walls and in the heart of our community.

A massive tip of the hat to the Shenandoah County Historical Society and the dedicated volunteers behind the scenes. We know firsthand how much coordination and heart it takes to pull off an event of this caliber, and the result is something the entire county can be proud of.

Heading to Woodstock? We hope you have a fantastic time taking in all the action! And if you’re looking to round out your historical adventure, the Mount Jackson Museum will be open today from 10AM-2PM at Town Hall. Whether you're coming or going, we’d love to see you for a quick visit.

HONORED & DEEPLY GRATEFUL. We are still floating a bit after last week’s Shenandoah County Historical Society annual meeting and dinner! The Mount Jackson Museum was incredibly honored to receive the 2026 John H. Adamson Excellence in Historic Preservation Award for our commemorative book, "Mount Jackson, Virginia: Celebrating 200 Years of History." To be recognized for capturing our town's journey—from its earliest days of pre-European settlement all the way to the modern era we love today—means the absolute world to us.

But truth be told, this award doesn't belong on a shelf in the museum; it belongs to our incredible community. This book was a true labor of love, and it simply wouldn't exist without the countless hours poured into it by our dedicated museum volunteers, the local historians who checked every fact, the community members who shared treasured family photos and stories, and everyone who contributed their time, memories, and heart to its creation. This belongs to all of you! Thank you for helping us preserve Mount Jackson's legacy.

We also want to extend our warmest congratulations to our fellow award recipient, the world-renowned military artist and historian, Keith Rocco! Keith was honored for his incredible work designing and coordinating the 80th Anniversary D-Day Omaha Beach Exhibit at the Woodstock Armory. It was an breathtaking, educational tribute, and we are so proud to share the evening with such remarkable talent.

Thank you again to the Shenandoah County Historical Society for this beautiful honor, and to everyone in our community who keeps our history alive every single day. We are so proud to be part of the Mount Jackson story!

Here in Shenandoah County we’re especially mindful of the generations who served, sacrificed, and helped shape the freedoms and communities we cherish today.

As we continue celebrating the Mount Jackson Bicentennial, we’re heading to Woodstock for the 2026 County Heritage Day and we need 1-2 more volunteers to join our team for the day!

If you love our town’s history and enjoy chatting with neighbors, we’d love to have you staff the Mt. Jackson Museum table. You’ll help us share stories of our 200-year journey, meet local history buffs, and help visitors take home a piece of history with our official history books.
