April "FIRSTS" from the U.S. Mint to Mount Jackson! While April 1st might be for pranks, we’re talking about some serious firsts in history this week! :)

DID YOU KNOW?
April 2, 1792: The U.S. Mint was officially established!
April 3, 1860: The very first Pony Express rider galloped off to deliver the mail!

But what was happening right here in our neck of the woods? Long before the "greenback" was the gold standard, Mount Jackson was already a bustling hub for travelers, traders, and settlers. While the national government was busy figuring out quarters and dimes, our local ancestors were using unique trade tokens, early bank notes, and ledger systems to keep the community moving.

Check out the video below for a sneak peek at some of the actual currency and commerce artifacts we have right here in our archives! From local bank history to the tokens that bought a day’s work, we’ve got the receipts of how Mount Jackson grew into the town we love today.

Think you’ve seen it all? Come verify it for yourself! Visit the Mt. Jackson Museum! We love sharing the "firsts" (seconds, and thirds) of our town’s incredible story.

Tomorrow: Help Us Stitch Together Mount Jackson’s Next Chapter!

Join us tomorrow, Saturday, March 14, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Town Hall for Stitched & Seasoned: Celebrating Women’s Heritage.

This is more than an event—it’s a community Share & Tell, and we want YOU to be the star.

WHAT TO BRING (optional fun): Pull that cherished family quilt out of the cedar chest or grab your grandmother’s well-loved heirloom cookbook. We will have extra tables ready for you to display your treasures, pull up a chair, and swap stories with your neighbors. Whether it’s a family secret recipe or a hand-stitched piece of history, your stories are what make Mount Jackson home.

A MUST-SEE AT THE MUSEUM: While you’re here, step into the Mount Jackson Museum to view a true local marvel: the Wayland Quilt. Dated February 7, 1861, this stunning piece was crafted by Anna M. Wayland (mother of Dr. John Wayland) at Woodlawn and presented to W.F. Will. It is a breathtaking window into our past that you won’t want to miss.

Event Highlights:

Meet the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Quilting Guild and see their incredible mission quilts.

Join the traditional Cakewalk for some local treats.

Visit the Mount Jackson Community Library for spring seeds and curated reads.

Share your family recipes on-site for our Digital Bicentennial Cookbook.

Admission is FREE. Come for the history, stay for the stories, and help us celebrate the hands and hearts that have shaped our town for 200 years.

See you tomorrow!
