Can recycling and litter prevention help lessen plastics in clouds?

Scientists have now found tiny plastic particles in a place few people would expect: inside clouds above mountains in Japan.

A research team led by Professor Hiroshi Okochi of Waseda University collected cloud-water samples from the summit of Mount Fuji, its southeastern foothills at Tarobo, and the summit of Mount Oyama. The sampling locations ranged from about 1,300 to 3,776 metres above sea level.

The study, published in Environmental Chemistry Letters in August 2023, identified nine types of plastic polymers and one type of rubber in the cloud samples. The particles measured between roughly 7 and 95 micrometres.

Researchers also found that some of these particles attracted water, meaning they could potentially participate in the process through which clouds form.

The discovery does not mean plastic is already controlling worldwide weather, but it reveals an extraordinary new pathway through which microscopic plastic can travel through the atmosphere.
