Flying Horse Farms (FHF) is a medical specialty camp that makes it possible for kids with serious illnesses and their families to find hope, joy, and belonging - always at no cost. Camp serves kids 7-21 with diagnoses including cancer, heart conditions, rheumatologic diagnoses, blood disorders, lung conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, craniofacial diagnoses, rare diagnoses, spinal cord diagnos

es, and internalized mental health conditions. FHF is accredited by the American Camp Association and is part of the SeriousFun Children’s Network - founded by Paul Newman - to be a community of independently managed and financed camps creating opportunities for children with serious illnesses and their families. Camp doesn't run on magic alone. It runs on people like these two, radios on, laughing between activities.

To every volunteer who gives their time so a kid can just be a kid: thank you. You make camp feel like camp.

Meet Opal πŸ’›

She first came to Flying Horse Farms as a camper. Now she's back as a volunteer.

In her words: "Growing up as a camper, FHF was the one place that I could go and exist as a 'regular' kid. Now as a volunteer I get the chance to watch, and help, other kids disconnect from their illnesses by simply having fun in an environment free from judgement."

πŸ•οΈ Favorite spot at camp: the waterfront
🍫 Favorite camp snack: s'mores
✨ Camp in three words: home, glitter, family

When she's not at camp she's a second-year public health and chemistry student on the pre-med path, and she dances with her university's company and plays guitar.

Thank you, πŸ’›

Meet Peyton πŸ’›

She volunteers at camp, and she's on her way into medicine.

In her words: "Volunteering at Flying Horse Farms gave me the opportunity to connect with kids who are stronger than anyone else I've met. They gave me a strong sense of purpose and courage as I continue onto the road of medicine in my future. I learned that beyond what people may see on the outside, every camper has a story that is waiting to be brought out of them."

πŸ•οΈ Favorite spot at camp: archery
🍿 Favorite camp snack: the popcorn
✨ Camp in three words: adventure, exciting, memorable

When she's not at camp she studies microbiology and American Sign Language at Ohio State.

The catch of the day. 🎣

Some kids get here and find out they're really good at something they've never tried before. Fishing is one of the best places to watch that happen.

Meet Lauren πŸ’›

In her words:

"Volunteering at Flying Horse Farms feels like a full-circle moment for me. For the past three years, I've had the honor of helping create and lead simulation training for the medical staff. This time, I had the opportunity to experience camp as a volunteer, and seeing the day-to-day magic firsthand was incredibly rewarding."

πŸ•οΈ Favorite spot at camp: the dining hall, for the light and the ceiling
🍳 Favorite camp snack: breakfast, always breakfast
✨ Camp in three words: pure magic (she only needed two)

When she's not at camp, Lauren is a Simulation Education Coordinator at Nationwide Children's Hospital and teaches in Otterbein University's nursing lab. She has two kids, 9 and 11, who keep her busy with hockey and soccer.

Arts and crafts, in full swing.

Beads everywhere, string in every color, and four separate very ambitious projects happening at the same table. For a few hours nobody here is a patient, they're just kids making stuff.

πŸ’› Thank you, Phi Kappa Tau!

The alumni and brothers of Phi Kappa Tau at the University of Akron were out at Mayfair Country Club on Sunday hosting the Flying Horse Farms Charity Golf Classic, and every dollar they raised is coming back to camp.

Phi Kappa Tau has been raising money for SeriousFun Children's Network for more than 35 years, and the Akron chapter has cheered on FHF since we opened our gates in 2010. So many of these guys have spent their own summers here as counselors. They know our campers, and that makes a day like this really personal for them and for us.

It means more kids with serious illnesses get to come to camp and have the freedom to just be a kid, always at no cost to camper families.

Thank you , and thank you . We are so grateful for all of you! πŸ’›

Dublin, you were wonderful last night. πŸ’›

We're still smiling about it. A whole evening of people stopping in for ice cream, saying hello, and turning an ordinary Wednesday into something that sends kids to camp. It meant the world to us.

Thank you to for three hours of scooping, for giving 25% of it back to camp, and for being the kind of neighbor who says yes to something like this. And thank you to everyone who came out, brought their kids, and made it such a fun night.

Camp is a little closer for a lot of kids because of you!
