Montgomery’s history is not just something we read about — it is something we work every day to protect, preserve, and share. Since its founding in 1954, the Montgomery Historical Society has been dedicated to honoring the people, places, and stories that shaped our community.
At the heart of that mission is the N.H. Davis Pioneer Complex and Museum, the historic home connected to Nathaniel Hart Davis, an early Montgomery lawyer and the town’s first mayor. The original 1851 log cabin grew over time into a home that reflects pioneer life, early Texas settlement, and the daily experiences of those who helped build Montgomery.
The preservation of this special place became possible through the generosity of Dr. Margaret Cameron, a Davis family heir, who donated the Davis Cottage to the Montgomery Historical Society in 1984. That gift gave the Society the opportunity — and the responsibility — to care for the home and open its story to the public.
Today, the museum is more than a building and artifacts. It is a place where visitors can step into Montgomery’s past, learn about the people who lived here, and better understand the role our town played in Texas history — the museum displays a replica of the original sketch of the Lone Star Flag and Republic of Texas seal, drawn by Dr. Charles Bellinger Stewart.
Through tours, exhibits, educational programs, community events, and the dedication of volunteers, the Montgomery Historical Society continues working to keep history alive for future generations. That mission is supported by memberships, public donations, historical grants, and special events such as Christmas in Historic Montgomery, which brings the community together while helping raise funds to preserve the N.H. Davis Museum, care for other historic properties owned by the Society, and share Montgomery’s history with visitors of all ages.
We invite you to follow, visit, volunteer, and help us preserve the N.H. Davis Museum — because Montgomery’s history belongs to all of us, and together we can make sure it is never forgotten.

Stroll through downtown Montgomery and enjoy beautiful quilts on display—each one stitched with care, creativity, and stories waiting to be told. If you’d like to bring a quilt for some quilt photography, the rocking chairs on the N. H. Davis Museum porch would make the perfect backdrop.
Pioneer women once gathered for quilting bees to mark major life milestones and community events. Mothers and grandmothers made use of scraps and old clothes to create quilts filled with memories—treasures passed down through the generations.
Come celebrate the artistry of quilting, the heritage of Montgomery, and the timeless tradition of turning fabric into stories and family history.

Congratulations to the Bethel Cemetery Association

IT’S OFFICIAL 🎉
BETHEL CEMETERY IS A HISTORIC TEXAS CEMETERY!

We are incredibly proud to share that the Texas Historical Commission has officially designated Bethel Cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery.

From the Texas Historical Commission:

“The Texas Historical Commission is honored to designate Bethel Cemetery as a Historical Texas Cemetery. The enclosed certificate is testament to your commitment to the preservation of this important historic resource.

This Historical Texas Cemetery designation is an official recognition of family and community graveyards that encourages preservation of historic cemeteries. This also records the cemetery location and boundaries in the Montgomery County deed records as historically dedicated and worthy of preservation.”

For generations, families of the Bethel community have cared for and preserved the history of those who came before us. What they protected generation after generation, is now officially recognized and recorded as an important piece of Texas history.

We are grateful for everyone, past and present, who has cared for Bethel Cemetery and for those who worked to make this designation possible.

Our next goal is the Official Texas Historical Marker, which will help tell the story of Bethel Cemetery, the early Bethel community and the generations laid to rest here.
