☀️ Happy Summer Solstice to our community and a sunny thank you to everyone that came out to kick off a summer of bountiful harvests, rest, and fun! Special thanks to Nothing Bundt cakes for the tasty donation, the Monrovia Community Garden Leadership Team for climbing the highest mountains (the top of the compost bin), and the volunteers and folks that turned compost bins, took home veggies, made amazing crafts, and learned alongside the best fellows in the region! Now our team will hunker down and plant some seeds this summer for amazing things around the corner! 🌱

This year, ~1,050 Temple City students engaged in our programs, exploring the garden and our ecosystem through science, art, literature, math, and interdisciplinary learning.

At Temple City High School, students came together with teachers and the community for Community Climate Action Day, one of our largest volunteer events yet. We also launched Eco Entrepreneurs—a new program for students to gain experience in leadership, sustainability, and service.

At Oak Avenue Intermediate School, we built a new school garden and piloted our first-ever Oak lesson, where students designed wind-dispersed seeds. We’re so excited for what next year will bring.

None of this would be possible without our incredible staff and fellow educators, school partners, and student leaders who help bring these programs to life 🌱

We’re excited to continue growing these programs - and to see what these students will build, design, and discover next.

This year, the ~1,121 students (grades 7–12) in our Monrovia secondary programs explored career pathways, entrepreneurship, and environmental stewardship through building vermicompost systems, growing hydroponics, creating plant fossils, and more.

Together with volunteers, they helped build a new garden at Monrovia High School and, alongside the MHS Humanities Academy, we partnered to develop a brand new seed library at Monrovia Community Garden.

We’re so proud of everything our students accomplished this year, and especially as we launch Eco Entrepreneurs (teaser and launch coming soon!), we’re excited for what’s next!

None of this would be possible without our incredible educators and staff, including our and fellows, who help bring these programs to life and support thousands of young learners 🌱

We also want to congratulate our graduating students heading off to college—we can’t wait to see how you continue to lead in environmental stewardship as you begin your next chapters!

This year, 2,228 elementary school students explored the garden through 48 unique lessons spanning TK–6th grade! 🌱

From planting seeds and discovering plant parts to composting food scraps, caring for worms, creating pollinator habitats, and investigating sustainable foods of the future, students built environmental knowledge and stewardship skills through hands-on learning every step of the way.

We couldn’t do this work without our brilliant staff educators and fellows educating thousands of kiddos 🌱

With schools out for the summer, our team came together for a professional development week of reflection, learning, and team building to prepare for a summer of programming and planning. 🌱

From honing our storytelling skills and exploring the Chino Water Basin to collecting and pinning insects, this week gave us new tools, knowledge, and inspiration to bring back to our community and school gardens. We’re excited to carry these experiences into another year of environmental education and community programming!

🌿 Food Scrap Drop-Off in partnership with LA Compost will soon be offering extended hours for the summer! ☀️

From June 5th through August 28th, bring your food scraps most Fridays from 5–8 PM at the Monrovia Street Fair south of Olive Ave. 🥕🍌♻️

This Friday, we’ll still be operating at normal hours from 5–7 PM. We can’t wait to see you there!!

Last week we kicked off the new garden at Oak Avenue Intermediate with a seed dispersal design competition 🌱💨 After observing examples from nature, students had 20 minutes to use scrap materials to engineer seeds that could travel the farthest using only wind power. From parachutes to helicopters to designs we never could’ve imagined, it was amazing to see student creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving in action.

A huge thank you to the students for participating with enthusiasm, to Jensine Lucas for hosting us, and for making this project happen. We’re so excited to keep growing with the Oak Ave community 🌿✨

This May our volunteers helped transform our gardens at Wild Rose Elementary and Monrovia Community Garden South through weeding, mulching, and planting. From making our gardens more ADA accessible to supporting student learning spaces, every hand made a difference! 💚
