Last week we kicked off the new garden at Oak Avenue Intermediate with a seed dispersal design competition 🌱💨 After observing examples from nature, students had 20 minutes to use scrap materials to engineer seeds that could travel the farthest using only wind power. From parachutes to helicopters to designs we never could’ve imagined, it was amazing to see student creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving in action.

A huge thank you to the students for participating with enthusiasm, to Jensine Lucas for hosting us, and for making this project happen. We’re so excited to keep growing with the Oak Ave community 🌿✨

This May our volunteers helped transform our gardens at Wild Rose Elementary and Monrovia Community Garden South through w**ding, mulching, and planting. From making our gardens more ADA accessible to supporting student learning spaces, every hand made a difference! 💚

A special thank you to and for always being willing to get your hands dirty with us. These gardens continue to grow because of your care and the care of the community 🌱🐝♻️

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! 🌱🍎

This week we’re celebrating not only our incredible garden educators, but also the amazing teachers who partner with us and welcome Food ED into their classrooms.

Thank you for making space for hands-on learning, exploration, and stewardship. From lessons on planting to cooking to isopod genetics, none of this work would be possible without you all who care deeply about your students and communities.

We’re so grateful to be able to grow alongside you. 💚

Happy Compost Awareness Week! 🌱

Here at Food ED our worm farmers Bri and Diana not only keep a large worm bin to make nutrient-rich vermicompost, but also to breed worms for giveaways and educational programs. These hardworking decomposers help turn food scraps into healthy soil while teaching our community about the power of composting. 🪱♻️

Last week we partnered with the City of La Cañada Flintridge for their Earth & Arbor Day Sustainability Celebration 🌎🌳

It was a joy bringing our compost expertise to a new community, along with our compost ambassadors (bugs!) and crafts including clay bug decorating 🐛, soil painting 🎨, and coffee filter butterflies 🦋. We loved spreading the magic of soil, compost, and all the tiny things that help our ecosystems thrive. ♻️

Thanks for having us, La Cañada Flintridge 💚

And that’s a wrap on Spring Care Day - caring for two of our school gardens at the same time 🌱

Huge shoutout to our community volunteers, , and Golden Star Technology for showing up today and being ready to w**d, mulch, and do everything in between. Because of you, students at Plymouth and Bradoaks Elementary now have tidied spaces to learn, grow, and connect with the environment 💚

To close out National Volunteer Week, we also want to give a special thank you to volunteers everywhere. Volunteerism is truly at the heart of everything we do. As a small team, our programs wouldn’t be possible without you all who show up again and again. We’re so grateful for each and every one of you 🌿
