San Gabriel Valley Choral Company

A community-based chorus serving the San Gabriel Valley for over 20 years. The Choral Company rehearses on Tuesday evenings in Monrovia.

Founded in 1995, the San Gabriel Valley Choral Company is a non-profit choir based in Monrovia, CA. The Choral Company performs three to four concerts per year, singing a broad repertoire that includes classical, spirituals, pop, jazz, opera, folk music, and music theater. Comprised of singers from throughought the Southland, the choir provides an opportunity for its members to challenge themselves and to share their love of music with San Gabriel Valley residents.

Can your shower vocals handle the spotlight? 🎶🎶🎶

Our summer season is coming in 🔥– and we’re opening up auditions! Whether you’re a high-note-hitting soprano or a harmony-loving bass, our community choir is a place where your voice belongs. No fancy resume required—just a love for music and the courage to sing out loud.

Auditions are scheduled for April 22nd from 6-8 pm at St. Luke's in Monrovia. Visit the audition page on our webpage to schedule your time or send us an email. We can’t wait to hear you!

Meet our Artistic Staff, Melissa Lai!

Melissa Lai is a vocalist/composer/arranger born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. Growing up playing classical piano and viola, she discovered her love for improvisatory music in high school, and has since deepened this love through studying jazz piano and now jazz voice. Melissa received a BM in Jazz Studies from California State University, Northridge, where she has performed with the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos, and the Studio Jazz Ensemble. She has also recorded with Gabriel Mininberg’s “Double Quartet”, which features jazz rhythm section, voice, and string quartet. As a singer, Melissa is passionate about and well-versed in jazz improvisation, jazz/pop lyric interpretation, Brazilian music, classical repertoire, and new music. She is currently gigging and teaching around LA, and she aims to use her versatility to bridge the many different communities she takes part in, whether as a bandleader or collaborator.

Meet our Artistic Staff, starting with our newest member, Samual Avila!!!

Samuel Avila is a vocalist, conductor, session singer, and educator born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Samuel received his Bachelor of Music at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. Currently, Samuel is a contracted vocalist for several professional ensembles across LA, including the Long Beach Camerata Singers, San Gabriel Valley Choral Company, and most notably, Tonality — a Grammy-award winning ensemble that focuses on uplifting underrepresented voices and social issues utilizing Choral Music to incite change, understanding, and dialogue. Samuel has also performed with some of the most influential voices within the choral and popular music industries, such as The Eagles, Tiesto, VOCES8, SAJE, and Scott Hoying of Pentatonix. Finally, Samuel was proud to make their opera debut in the world premiere performance of “Sally Ride” written by Dana Kaufman.

When he is not performing, Samuel is a music educator and conductor for several charter schools and youth choral organizations such as The National Children’s Chorus, San Fernando Valley Youth Chorus, and The New Academy in Canoga Park. Samuel is so excited to join the San Gabriel Valley Choral Community and he is looking forward to making amazing music this season!
