💙🖤 FIVE YEARS LATER: A SACRIFICE REMEMBERED, A LEGACY THAT LIVES ON

End of Watch: October 12, 2021

Today, the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation honors the fifth anniversary of the line-of-duty death of Fresno County Sheriff's Correctional Officer IV Toamalama "Malama" Scanlan.

Officer Scanlan passed away on October 12, 2021, after courageously fighting for more than five years following a shooting at the Fresno County Main Jail. He left behind his beloved wife, Tepatasi, six children, and a correctional family that will never forget his sacrifice.

This year, his legacy reached an extraordinary milestone.

On September 14, 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2004, "The Scanlan Bill," into law. This landmark legislation grants limited peace officer status to qualifying correctional personnel in Fresno and San Joaquin counties, providing additional safety protections and important line-of-duty death benefits for their families.

What began as an unimaginable tragedy has become a lasting legacy of protection for correctional professionals and their loved ones.

CPOF extends heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the Scanlan family and everyone who worked tirelessly to make this legislation a reality. Your perseverance has ensured that Malama's name will continue to make a difference for generations to come.

On this solemn anniversary, we remember his sacrifice, celebrate the meaningful progress made in his honor, and reaffirm our commitment to never forgetting those who have given their lives in service.

Rest in peace, Malama. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Your legacy lives on.
