At First Tee – Central Valley, we often say that golf is just the vehicle. What we’re really building is community.

First Tee is a youth development organization that uses the game of golf to help young people build confidence, character, and life skills that go far beyond the course. But what truly makes this program special isn’t just the sport, it’s the people, the mentorship, and the environment where kids feel supported and encouraged to grow.

Every time a participant steps onto the course, they’re stepping into something bigger than a lesson. They’re building relationships, learning how to overcome challenges, and discovering what they’re capable of achieving.

Some journeys come full circle—and this is one of them.

If you’ve been part of First Tee – Central Valley for any length of time, there’s a good chance you’ve felt Pat Burda’s impact—whether you realized it or not.
For more than 20 years, Pat has been a dedicated supporter, leader, and champion of our mission.

From time spent coaching on the ground to serving over a decade on our Board, his influence has helped shape the very foundation of what First Tee – Central Valley is today.

He has poured his time into countless clinics, meetings, fundraisers, and conversations—always with the goal of strengthening this program and creating more opportunities for the young people we serve.

And now, in a moment that feels both meaningful and full of purpose, Pat is stepping back into a role that started it all—coaching.

Returning home, alongside a community he cares deeply about, Pat is once again investing directly in the next generation. Because for him, this has never just been about golf—it’s about people, mentorship, and making a difference where it matters most.

The Community Our Kids Need Starts With a Coach.

In a world where young people are often surrounded by screens, noise, pressure, and constant comparison… coaches offer something different.

They offer presence.
They offer consistency.
They offer patience.
They offer belief.

At First Tee – Central Valley, our coaches help create the kind of community every child deserves—a place where kids feel safe to fail, brave enough to try again, and supported enough to become exactly who they were meant to be.

They teach much more than golf etiquette or course management. They teach emotional regulation. Communication. Responsibility. Respect. Resilience. The very skills that build stronger families, stronger workplaces, and stronger communities.

When people see First Tee, they often see golf clubs, practice greens, and smiling kids.

What they don’t always see are the coaches behind every moment.
The coach who stays late to answer one more question.

The coach who notices when a participant seems quieter than usual.

The coach who teaches that losing with grace matters just as much as winning with confidence.

The coach who reminds a young person that mistakes don’t define them—how they respond does.

At First Tee – Central Valley, our coaches are the heartbeat of this organization. They are the reason participants return year after year. They are the reason parents trust us with their children. They are the reason our alumni continue to come back, volunteer, and give back to the place that helped shape them.

Every future teacher, business leader, parent, coach, volunteer, and community advocate starts somewhere.

For so many of our participants… it starts with a coach.

Behind Every Game Changer, There’s a Coach. 💚⛳

This week, we join First Tee chapters across the country in celebrating First Tee Week—a time dedicated to recognizing the people who make everything we do possible: our coaches.

At First Tee – Central Valley, our coaches do so much more than teach grip, stance, or how to line up a putt. They teach young people how to stand tall after a tough day. How to shake hands with confidence. How to work through frustration. How to lead with integrity. How to believe in themselves—even when the shot, the grade, the friendship, or life itself feels hard.

For many of our participants, our coaches become some of the most consistent mentors in their lives. They are the adults who know their names, notice when something feels off, celebrate the small wins, and remind them that growth often happens in the uncomfortable moments.

The community we’ve built at First Tee doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because coaches show up—week after week, season after season—pouring into kids who will one day become leaders in our schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods.

So this First Tee Week, we say one thing loud and clear:
Dear Coach… thank you.
Thank you for every lesson. Every conversation. Every high five. Every moment you chose to believe in a young person before they fully believed in themselves.

Because without coaches… there is no First Tee. There is no community. And there are no Game Changers.
