Last week, founders in the Portal Fund:RISE program took the stage to pitch their businesses and share their plans for growth.
Through the program, each founder received $5,000 to invest in their business, along with access to mentorship, resources, and support from the Innovation Portal.

Most people think 3D printing means cheap plastic toys.

We just printed a bracket that can handle 300-degree heat. Made from nylon six carbon fiber. Not your desktop printer material.

This bracket is heading to a sea lab. It needs to survive saltwater, extreme temperatures, and constant use. Regular plastic would crack in days.

The materials available now are insane. We're printing functional parts that replace metal components. Lighter weight. Faster iteration. Same strength.

Ben Kaiser spent months of tinkering with a jigsaw and acrylic at home. Making progress, but hitting limits.

He didn't know what we had in store at the Innovation Portal's 3D lab. We can print exactly what he needed... to the millimeter. Game over for garage experiments.

The process is surprisingly simple. Sketch the idea. Transfer to 3D modeling software. Scale it down for testing. Print in an hour. The moment of truth: did our measurements work?

Almost. The laptop fit, but the angles needed tweaking.

This is why you prototype. Build, measure, learn. Not to get it perfect the first time, but to fail fast and iterate faster. One hour gave Ben more insights than weeks of home experimentation.

She walked into her first Portal Fund:RISE session convinced she knew her market.

Two hours later, she realized she had been talking to an audience of one. That person who said "yeah, that's a great idea" - turns out they don't represent everyone. Hard lesson, but necessary.

The biggest shift? Learning to open up about her idea instead of guarding it like state secrets.

For months, she held everything close to her chest. Afraid someone would steal her idea. But you can't validate what you dont't share.

Now she's excited to have real conversations with real people. To test assumptions instead of protecting them.

Sometimes the most uncomfortable homework is exactly what you need.
