Far from home, close to the hunt

Follow YETI ambassador Fred Campbell, a big game hunter, fly fisherman and business owner from Quebec, Canada, as he trades the lush forests of the Gaspé Peninsula for the high desert of west-central New Mexico. On land RMEF helped conserve through the Alamocita Creek project, Campbell takes on his first spot-and-stalk elk hunt, armed with an open-sighted muzzleloader.

North Carolina is making history! Watch the journey that set the stage for North Carolina’s first modern-day elk hunt.

In the 1990s, sportsmen and women in North Carolina began asking a simple question: Could elk once again thrive in these mountains? In 2001, the idea became reality. 25 elk were released into Cataloochee Valley. A year later, 27 more followed. Over the next 25 years, the herd grew and spread beyond Great Smoky Mountains National Park onto state, federal, tribal and private lands.

Bringing back elk was never the end of the story. It was the beginning.

Hunting is Conservation Reason: #18

Hunters generate funding for scientific wildlife research. In 2025 alone, RMEF allocated over $1.3 million that will leverage $6.5 million in partner funding for elk and other wildlife research in 13 states and two projects of national benefit.
