Run Minnesota

Run Minnesota is the oldest and largest running organization in Minnesota. Who is Run Minnesota? In fact, we were the 8th running organization in the country.

We’ve been around for a while and have come a long way since our humble beginnings. Sure, we’ve had a rebrand and a name change. However, at the end of the day we’re still a non-profit, membership-based organization inspired to motivate runners across the North Star State and beyond! What Does Run Minnesota Do? RACE

We organize our own budget-friendly Run Minnesota races with discounts for our members in thanks for their support. You can also find races in Minnesota using our online calendar where other local race organizers can submit events free of charge. TRAIN

We help runners train. Wondering how to start running? Want to train for a marathon? We offer group training classes in the Twin Cities and free 5k and 10k training plans for our members. INSPIRE

We proudly host inclusive and welcoming weekly group runs in the Twin Cities. Looking for a run club near you? Wondering where to buy your next pair of shoes? We are all about providing resources and support! Check out our page dedicated to running groups in Minnesota to connect with runners in your area. ADVOCATE

We advocate for running. Run Minnesota provides input on projects that impact our running community. We also operate a foundation that funds grants to support local running. Let’s Join Forces

We are driven to help inspire, support, and advocate for all runners because we do, feel, and run our best when we’re together. We’re here for the long run and we hope you’ll join us.

A running routine starts with something you can repeat. Choose a few realistic days each week, keep the first outings manageable, and give yourself time to build from there. Your routine might include short runs, run/walk intervals, easy movement days, and recovery between efforts.

The goal at the beginning is to create a rhythm that fits your life. Consistent, manageable miles give you a foundation you can gradually build on as your confidence and fitness grow. Start with the schedule you can sustain, then build one week at a time.

Save this as a reminder that every running routine begins somewhere.

Recovery is part of the training plan, too. A rest day gives your body a full break from running, while a recovery run keeps you moving at an intentionally easy effort. Both can support adaptation between harder workouts, long runs, and races. The right choice depends on how your body is responding to the work you have already done.

Feeling generally good but carrying some normal fatigue? An easy recovery run may help you stay loose and maintain your routine.

Feeling unusually worn down, especially sore, or overdue for a break? A true rest day can give your body more space to recover.

Strong training includes knowing when to work and when to recover. Pay attention to how you feel, keep easy days easy, and give recovery the same purpose you give your workouts.

Save this for the next time you are deciding between a recovery run and a day off.

The first group run can be the hardest one to show up for. A few small actions can make it much easier for someone new to feel like they belong:

1. Introduce yourself before the run starts.
2. Explain the route and what to expect.
3. Make space for a range of paces and run/walk approaches.
4. Check in so no one feels like they have to navigate the experience alone.
5. Invite them back before everyone heads home.A welcoming running community is built one interaction at a time.

If someone is brand new, returning after time away, or just looking for people to share miles with, how we welcome them matters.

Save this for your next group run, and help make running a place where more people feel comfortable showing up.

Most runners learn a few things the hard way. Things like:

Easy days really should be easy.
Consistency matters more than one perfect workout.
Walking is allowed.
Rest is part of training.
Comparing your pace to someone else’s can take the joy out of your own progress.

Experience has a way of changing how we approach the miles ahead, and someone else may need to hear what you’ve learned.

What’s one piece of running advice you’d give to your past self? Share it in the comments.

Every strong running season has people and partners behind it.

We are grateful to Fleet Feet Marathon Sports for supporting our season and helping make more race, training, and community experiences possible for Minnesota runners. That support matters for the first-time runner asking where to begin, the goal-oriented runner building toward race day, the family making movement part of their weekend, and the community members who show up to volunteer, cheer, and connect.

Join us in thanking Fleet Feet Marathon Sports for being here for the long run!
