Mncan MnCAN is a non-profit organization in Minnesota dedicated to helping people with aphasia and primary progressive aphasia improve their quality of life.

Aphasia is a language disorder most commonly caused by strokes. People with aphasia may have difficulties speaking and using words, understanding others' words, reading and writing words, using and understanding numbers. As a result, communications can be limited and challenging. Aphasia may lead to painful social isolation. It is often misunderstood to be an intellectual disorder, which it is NOT

. Other causes of aphasia include brain tumors, head injuries, infections, degenerative neurologic conditions and Primary Progressive Aphasia. Each MnCAN conversation group is facilitated by a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). These groups include students and community volunteers who are trained to use conversation strategies to support effective communication by all members. Groups meet weekly for 90 minute classes. Fall and Winter sessions meet for 12 weeks, Summer sessions meet for 8 weeks. Space is limited for the conversation groups, so register for the next session today!

It’s Day 1 of MnCAN’s 30 Days of Life with Aphasia! Meet Ric!

Every day in June, we’ll spotlight someone from our MnCAN family—participants, care partners, facilitators, volunteers, and board members—sharing their lived experiences and insights about how MnCAN strengthens communication and community across Minnesota.
Your voice matters here. Your story matters here.

It’s HERE — the biggest and most important month of the year for MnCAN! June is National Aphasia Awareness Month, and throughout the month we are focused on spreading awareness, advocacy, education, and connection for individuals and families impacted by aphasia and primary progressive aphasia (PPA).

Why is this so important? Because aphasia and PPA are often invisible disabilities. In a fast-paced world, communication challenges can easily be misunderstood or overlooked. Yet millions of individuals are navigating language difficulties every single day — often feeling isolated, frustrated, or unseen.

At MnCAN, we believe education creates understanding, and understanding creates more welcoming, patient, accommodating, and supportive communities.
Will YOU help us this month by sharing awareness, learning more about aphasia and PPA, supporting our mission, and helping others feel seen, heard, and included? Together, we can make a meaningful difference.

Inspired by someone who has aphasia or PPA? Inspired by their care partner, by MnCAN, by one of our amazing group facilitators? Believe in our mission and vision?

Donate here today: https://givebutter.com/mncan-june-aphasia-awareness-month-2026- you can find your own TEAM to donate to (conversation group or support group) or you can dedicate your donation to someone who inspires you....every donation matters.

At MnCAN, community comes first. 💜

We are special because we are local. We are unique because we truly understand the journey our Minnesota aphasia and PPA community members are walking every single day.

To our participants:
We see YOUR hard work.
We see YOUR courage.
We see YOUR potential.

We do not define you by limitations — we celebrate your strengths, your voice, and every step forward.

To our care partners and families:
We see YOUR dedication.
We see the love, patience, advocacy, and support you give every day — even on the hard days.
And we want you to know: you matter here too.

At Minnesota Connect Aphasia Now (MnCAN), no one walks this journey alone.
We are here for YOU, for connection, for support, and for community. 💜

MnCAN Board Member Dr. Ganesh Asaithambi shares how Mark’s quick medical treatment helped save his life — and why recognizing the signs of stroke and getting immediate medical care is so important. Acting FAST can help prevent permanent impairments and save lives. Help us spread awareness by learning the signs of stroke and encouraging others to seek treatment right away. Time = Brain.
