LRAP Minnesota Helping Minnesota public interest attorneys repay their student loans.

Loan Repayment Assistance Program of Minnesota (LRAP Minnesota) offers comprehensive student loan guidance and funding to legal aid attorneys throughout Minnesota–ensuring that dedicated public interest attorneys are here to serve the Minnesotans who need them most. LRAP Minnesota was founded in 1991 through the joint efforts of students at Minnesota’s law schools, the Minnesota Justice Foundation

, and the Minnesota State Bar Association. Current support from these collaborators–and the generosity of donors like you–means that 50 legal aid attorneys can serve 10,000 low-income clients each year.

If you’re pursuing Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), you may have seen some concerning headlines—or noticed that the qualifying payment count in your own account changed.

Here’s what we know right now:

Recent media reports say the Department of Education is reviewing PSLF records and rolling back some credit that had previously been given to borrowers. Some borrowers have reported seeing months disappear from their qualifying payment counts.

There are still important unanswered questions about who will ultimately be affected and which previously credited months may be changed.

So what can borrowers do right now?

**𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.**

Keep copies of your:

• PSLF forms and employment certifications
• Payment histories
• Previous qualifying-payment counts
• Notices from Federal Student Aid
• Communications with your loan servicer

If your payment count changes, save a screenshot or other record showing what you see.

And keep checking Federal Student Aid for official updates rather than assuming that a change on your dashboard is necessarily the final word on your PSLF progress.

We know how stressful this uncertainty can be for people who have built careers and made financial decisions around the promise of PSLF.

LRAP Minnesota will continue following these developments and sharing information that can help public interest lawyers navigate what comes next.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness continues to be a lifeline for so many public interest attorneys and public service professionals — and right now, staying informed matters more than ever.

We’re proud to share this timely article on PSLF, co-written with Legal Aid - Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid's Heather Vlieger, whose longtime leadership and advocacy in public interest helped shape this important discussion.

The article highlights key developments, ongoing uncertainty surrounding PSLF, and why these protections remain critical for people committed to serving their communities.

If you work in legal aid, government, or other nonprofits, this is worth the read.
