💛 September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 💛

Every week, more than 290 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer, but pediatric cancer research receives just a small fraction of federal cancer funding.

The VLCF has proudly committed to supporting pediatric cancer research, granting funds to innovative projects that create better treatments and prevention methods, and bring us closer to finding a cure.

During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we honor the courage of the kids and families living with childhood cancer and we reaffirm our dedication to support progress in research and care.

August 2026 Impact Update!

This month, we are highlighting Team Phoenix, Aurora Health Care's cancer survivorship program. Team Phoenix is a 14-week fitness, education, and triathlon training program for women that helps participants improve their quality of life, establish healthy lifestyle habits, and build lasting connections with fellow survivors, healthcare providers, and a supportive community.

Each season culminates in a sprint triathlon, and this past July, over 100 Team Phoenix athletes and alumni participated in the TriIng for a Cure Triathlon, supported by medical professionals, volunteers, and community members who helped make the experience possible. The Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation is proud to continue providing funding to Team Phoenix, supporting its mission to help cancer survivors transition from surviving cancer to thriving beyond it.

How might chemotherapy make the liver more vulnerable to cancer cells - and how can that be prevented? This week, we visited Dr. Nikki Lytle’s lab at the Medical College of Wisconsin to see how her team is using VLCF funding to investigate these important questions.

Dr. Lytle’s team previously discovered that chemotherapy can cause immune cells in the liver, known as Kupffer cells, to either die or lose their ability to protect the liver from invading tumor cells. Kupffer cells help prevent cancer from taking hold in the liver, and it was exciting to learn more about this team’s research to protect these important immune cells during our visit.

VLCF is proud to support cutting-edge research like this, which is helping to identify new therapeutic strategies to prevent pancreatic cancer from spreading to the liver and ultimately, saving lives.
