This November, our theme in classes is Planes of Movement! Our bodies move in many different ways, which is part of what makes them so cool. Strengthening one pattern can make the others stronger, so it is important to continue training all of the planes of movement throughout our lives! Stick with us for a minute here. We're going to learn something new today. 🧠💪
What are the planes of movement?
Sagittal - moving forwards and backwards. Think of walking, running, and lunges.
Frontal - moving side to side. Think of cartwheels, jumping jacks, and side-stepping out of the way.
Transverse - rotational movement. Think of bicycle crunches, reaching, and twisting.
As we age and/or become more sedentary, we often use less of the lateral (side to side) and transverse (rotational) planes. The muscles that are used when we move side to side and when we rotate help us stabilize ourselves when we are just moving forward and back.
For example, even when doing a forward lunge, the muscles in the inside and outside of the hips and thighs are still used to stabilize the leg in that position.
If we stop training all of the planes, we are at a higher risk for falling and we will have less stabilization when doing all movements. Our takeaway? Keep training in all directions!
