✨ Community. Collaboration. Change.
Today in New Milford, local leaders, advocates, and community partners came together to highlight the importance of ending hunger and expanding access to healthy school meals for every child in Connecticut.
From heartfelt remarks by Mayor Pete Bass, State Representatives Maria Horn, Patrick Callahan, and William Buckbee, to powerful reflections from United Way, New Milford Social Services, and community voices like Emylly Silva, the message was clear — no child should go hungry in our state.
Thank you to all who joined us, shared their stories, and stood united for   💚

What are school meals REALLY like in Connecticut? .lesser was able to see and even taste what Beman Middle School in Middletown was serving to its students — on the menu on Monday, March 31 was Korean Grilled Chicken with the chicken sourced locally from Vegetable Lo Mein and Spinach & Strawberry Salad. Arugula was available for tasting, harvested from a Hydroponic System built by 7th Grade Science and distributed by

“Privilege often means never having to think about certain struggles like whether a child will eat today. For many families in Connecticut, school meals are a convenience. For others, they are a lifeline. And now, that lifeline is on the chopping block.”

🔦Team Spotlight: Thank you Amari, Policy Coordinator at EHC! for testifying in support of HB 7013, a farm to school bill that strengthens the CT Local Food for Schools Incentive Program and requests funding for CT Grown for CT Kids Grants.

🤔Why this matters: School meals provide the highest-quality, most nutritious meal a student eats during the day, regardless of the student’s race or income. Funding for schools to purchase local foods for their meals enables them to offer even more fresh, local menu items and options. Recent cancellation of federal local foods funding means less funding for local foods and local farms. By asking our state government to continue to support partnerships between local farmers and Connecticut schools, it is a win-win for our local economy and our students.

ℹ️What’s happening now: HB 7013 was unanimously supported by the Education Committee and voted to move forward to the Appropriations Committee - the next step in moving the bill forward and securing funding to carry out its goals.
