The fourth of nine “Independent Declarations” installations at Olin Library on the Wesleyan campus goes up starting TODAY. Now through December, each of the nine pieces on the album will get a week (or so) for folks to go visit and hear that composition along with imagery and the composer’s reflections on the piece and its subject matter.

This week (November 4-10) we have “Candid World” by drummer and singer/songwriter Rachel Housle. For this performance Noah Baerman played Wurlitzer electric piano and acoustic guitar and was joined by Erica Tracy on vocals, Nate Mondschein on drums, and Spencer Hattendorf on electric bass, for a session in West Springfield, MA at Ghost Hit Recording. The piece provides some emotional respite through the philosophical examination of, as Housle reflects, “where we are now and who truly has access to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the present day.” Conceived as a folkish tune, it is reinvented here as a soul ballad in the vein of early Donny Hathaway.

The third of nine “Independent Declarations” installations at Olin Library on the Wesleyan campus is UP. Now through December, each of the nine pieces on the album will get a week (or so) for folks to go visit and hear that composition along with imagery and the composer’s reflections on the piece and its subject matter.

This week (October 27-November 3) we have “Mr. Jefferson Has Some Words About the Slave Trade” by pianist and composer David Hanlon. For this performance Noah Baerman played piano and Rhodes electric piano and was joined by Jocelyn Pleasant, Tim Norton, and Alex Tripp. Perhaps the most musically ominous of all the album’s performances, Hanlon bases the music on a Jill LePore article on the Founding Fathers’ decision to omit reference to enslaved people from the Declaration. He singles out Jefferson, of whom he states in this context, that “his thunderous harangue amounts to sound and fury signifying nothing,” a sentiment represented through moments of gnarly dissonance.

The second of nine “Independent Declarations” installations at Olin Library on the Wesleyan campus goes up starting TODAY. Now through December, each of the nine pieces on the album will get a week (or so) for folks to go visit and hear that composition along with imagery and the composer’s reflections on the piece and its subject matter.

This week (October 19-26) we have “We Declare” by pianist, harmonica virtuoso, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Sam Friedman. This is a multifaceted and ultimately anthemic instrumental reflection focusing on the “pursuit” part of the pursuit of happiness. In Sam’s words, “It is that honest struggle, that act of united aspiration, striving together toward better worlds, rather than basking in an illusion of having simply arrived, that perhaps may come to define this great nation more than any single beat of Declaration.” Jocelyn Pleasant lays it down on drums and Tim Norton, Alex Tripp, and Noah Baerman all have solos along the way.

RMI Records, a division of the nonprofit Resonant Motion, is proud to announce the release of Independent Declarations by Noah Baerman and Friends, a collaborative musical project serving both as celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the document’s ongoing relevance.

Baerman, a teacher as well as a musician, gathered fifteen musicians from his long list of students from his tenure at Wesleyan University and his time at the Center for Creative Youth (CCY), nine of which were commissioned to compose new works reflecting on the present-day relevance and impact of the Declaration of Independence. Baerman, along with two ensembles composed of his former students, brought the pieces to life, exploring a handful of genres such as both straight-ahead and experimental jazz, R&B, blues, folk, Latin music, and various hybrids thereof.

In celebration of its release, Noah Baerman will hosting a discussion of how this collaborative reflection with Wesleyan and Center for Creative Youth alumni came together. Join him this Saturday, noon-1, in the Smith Reading Room on the first floor of Olin Library. Olin Library will also be hosting a series of nine media installations featuring a different artist each week. This project was made possible by a Semiquincentennial grant from the Middletown Commission on the Arts and by the generosity of Resonant Motion’s donors. These installations and an accompanying WESeminar by Baerman are sponsored by Wesleyan’s World Music Archives & Music Library.

Have you checked out the EP Heart Roots by Malin Carta Malin Carta and K. Xie K. Xie ?! This collection of music is a wonderful mix of songs and instrumental pieces brought to life by a quartet of talented musicians. A cool detail is that K. Xie and Malin met through this year’s Claire’s Continuum Claire’s Continuum commission season. We are honored to have even that smallest part in how these two artists met. Side note: it’s Bandcamp Friday! You know what that means! For today (and other similarly designated Fridays which usually are the first Friday of any given month), Bandcamp forgoes collecting their cut of music sales on their platform. Jazz Up Close is back! The first concert of the season will feature vocalist and composer Andrea Wolper Andrea Wolper! Wolper, well established in the New York scene, has performed on many legendary stages including the 55 Bar, Blue Note, and Dizzy’s club and has toured around the US and internationally. One of the singers covered in The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide (Yanow, Backbeat Books), she is “a brilliant musical storyteller” who “brings songs to life, whatever their source,” and “a terrific arranger, taking new paths rather than expected ones”. She will be joined by Noah Baerman Noah Baerman on piano, Henry Lugo Henry Lugo on bass, and Jocelyn Pleasant Jocelyn Pleasant on drums. Along with the music, there will be opportunities for dialogue between the artists and attendees. Come join us at the Ring Family Performing Arts Hall, Friday September 18th, 7:00 PM for a good time! This Thursday! Come see the Noah Baerman trio for a warm soulful evening. Noah will be joined by Henry Lugo on bass and Curtis Nowosad on drums and the three will be presenting music from a collection of pianists with large influence on Noah’s playing. The concert itself is part of the “Spring into the Wood” event at the Wood Memorial Library and Museum in South Windsor, celebrating history, culture, music, and community. Admission is free but donations are welcome! Reserve your tickets in the link in our bio!
