The Motivational Edge uses culturally relevant arts as a motivational platform to inspire youth toward academic achievement, increased self confidence and to build essential life skills. ME provides youth with a creative outlet for musical expression, while at the same time integrating components of literacy into its music programs. e tutoring is available for all youth, and is mandatory for students that want to participate in music and arts classes but are receiving a “C” or below in one or more core subjects in school. Using music as a motivational and learning platform, we impel students who are underachieving toward desperately needed academic instruction. The youth currently served by The Motivational Edge are walking testaments that music is an extremely powerful learning tool when integrated into the academic setting. Our unique programs integrate reading and writing skills with music instruction in innovative ways, which motivates and benefits our students. The Art of Creative Writing and Lyrical Expression includes a cutting edge writing component, which emphasizes different writing styles, types of poetry, and various forms of lyrical developments which improve performance in the classroom and on standardized tests. This also provides a rare and safe outlet for our under-resourced youth to positively express themselves, without being judged. ME also uses music as a therapeutic tool for youth on various levels of the autism spectrum.
