Every year on September 17th, we celebrate our Constitution! It is the document that made us a nation and is a reminder of where we have been, and its ideals are an invitation to where we can go. The Constitution is about us, for us. Our ever-growing democracy needs all of us to take a seat at the decision-making table and be a part of building solutions and community.

Last week, an incredible group of young athletes received their Leadership Certificates following six weeks of guided training. Earlier this week at Newark's City Hall, our Wilhelmina Holder Fellows shared with Mayor Ras J. Baraka a draft ordinance to strengthen Newark's Youth Committee—a solution we believe can empower and engage young people across the city. In 2019, we announced Newark as the first Civic City, and since then, it has served as a model for the nation through its residents who step forward to lead, its educators who invest in the next generation, and its public leaders who recognize that the strongest solutions come from working alongside citizens.

We would like to extend our deepest thanks to Mayor Ras Baraka for sharing his time to meet with us and for sharing his support for this initiative. Our heartfelt gratitude also goes to our partners throughout this journey for their support of the Newark Civic Trust and the Civic City movement: Gem Project Sanctuary, Boys & Girls Club of Newark, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, & Union Counties, NJ, SHE Wins Inc., and many more.

Special shout-out to Nathan Duguid for representing the Fellowship with confidence and expertise alongside our Fellowship coordinator, Akeem Miller, and Executive Director, Rashawn Davis. Newark continues to set an example for citizen leadership and engagement!

250 years ago a bold idea took root: that the future of the nation would not rest in the hands of a king, but in the hands of its people. At this historic anniversary, we have the opportunity to write the next chapter of that story. Together, we can ensure that the next 250 years are defined by what we have built together. #250
