Qiqihar has a history dating back to the Qing Dynasty. With extreme winters and a struggling economy, Qiqihar is not an easy place to live, and many of its young people have left to find a better life elsewhere. This is also true in local house churches, which are struggling to raise up a new generation of Christian leaders.

With the extra week in October, let’s pray for the main subjects of our Season 4 Podcast, Mike and Daisy. They are missionaries from the Chinese house church, planting a bilingual and multigenerational church in Japan. May the Lord lead and encourage them in their work.

Daisy and Mike are not like many traditional missionaries. They are moving to Japan to plant a Chinese-speaking congregation, for Chinese expats living in the area. They are also not like other immigrant pastors, seeking to minister to only their own people in a foreign land. Their goal is cross-cultural, muti-generational missions that will eventually bring revival to the Japanese church.

The distance between Beijing and Tokyo is only a little over 1300 miles, about the distance between Boston, MA and Orlando, FL. People in both China and Japan practice a version of Buddhism. Qiqihar is a city in western Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China. The city was originally settled by nomadic herdsmen; today, it has a population of about 4 million.

Qiqihar is located along the Nen River, near many wetlands. The city has harsh winters and an extreme climate. Local church leaders say they need prayer as they strive to pass on the faith to their children.

Daisy and Mike wanted to follow God’s call. They longed to follow in the footsteps of generations of missionaries who sacrificed their lives so others might know God. After years of training in South Korea, the aspiring missionary couple finished their seminary degrees. Their basic education was complete, and they both knew that long-term, they wanted to share the gospel cross-culturally.
