Rev. Tony Lorenzen's sermon from yesterday kicking off our month on the theme Beginnings. He reflects on how we often start over in life, but we never really start from zero or start from scratch. https://youtu.be/LB6pYdfzJXg

He begins with a quote from Bruce Springsteen's memoir Born to Run, "No one you have been and no place you have gone ever leaves you. The new parts of you simply jump in the car and go along for the rest of the ride. The success of your journey and your destination all depend on who's driving."

Then he talks about being "born again" not as a free pass to ignore the past, but as a process of growth, integration, healing, making peace with ourselves and in this way Unitarian Universalists are born again and again and again.

He suggests religion and spirituality have a lot of ways to think of new beginnings such as reincarnation, resurrection, rebirth, renewal, and just calling a "do-over" like children when playing a game.

August 2nd at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Meriden we continue our tradition of somewhat less formal worship during July and August with a service called “Stories Around the Campfire”. Being held indoors and in the morning we will have to use a “virtual campfire” as the setting – but the spirit will hold.

From the time our earliest ancestors gathered in tribal groups, people have gathered around a communal fire and exchanged stories. They told stories that kept their history alive. They told stories that explored the mystery of who they were, and where they came from. They told stories that passed skills and knowledge from one generation to the next, stories that rooted them in an identity and held them together.

To this day, gathering around a campfire for stories and song is an important tradition for many. Join us this Sunday – bring a story to tell if you wish, a story about an event in your life that informed you or shaped you. A story about someone who was important to you, about an adventure, about a journey that lives with you. Joined by Bobby McDonald on his guitar we will also share some songs, and unwrap the stories behind some of those as well.

Sunday Morning, August 2nd 10:30 AM, at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Meriden – 328 Paddock Avenue. If you can’t join us in person, you can join us online at go.uumeriden.org/zoom
