I need to say this plainly.
A veteran who dies by su***de is not a coward.
You do not know what was happening inside that person’s head.
You do not know how long they fought.
You do not know how many nights they made it through before the night they could not.
And you certainly do not get to take one devastating moment and use it to define an entire life.
Their service still mattered.
Their courage still mattered.
Their sacrifices still mattered.
The people they loved still remember everything that came before the way they died.
Families who lose someone to su***de are already carrying something unimaginably heavy. They should not also have to hear cruel judgments about the person they lost.
We need to get better at talking about su***de without shame.
Without turning suffering into weakness.
Without making grieving families defend someone who is no longer here to defend themselves.
If you are struggling right now, please tell somebody.
In the U.S., you can call or text 988. Veterans can call 988 and press 1.
Stay long enough for somebody to help carry some of it.
