Today, we honor one of the most recognizable symbols of our nation: the American flag.

Today, we proudly celebrate the founding of the United States Army on June 14, 1775, more than a year before America declared its independence.
For 251 years, Soldiers have stood ready to defend our nation, preserve our freedoms, and answer the call wherever duty takes them. From the Revolutionary War to today's missions around the globe, generations of Army men and women have demonstrated courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to our country.

🇺🇸 The McHenry VFW is proud to promote the 2026 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen Scholarship competitions! 🇺🇸

This year’s theme:
“What a Veteran Taught Me About America”

These scholarship programs encourage students to reflect on patriotism, democracy, and the sacrifices made by those who served our country.

📅 Deadline to apply: October 31, 2026

Eligibility:
✔ Applicants must be American citizens
✔ Students do NOT need to be related to a veteran
✔ Students do NOT need to be affiliated with a veteran organization

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to share their voice, honor veterans, and compete for scholarship awards.
