Mattapoisett Lions Club Mattapoisett Lions Club The Mattapoisett Lions Club, sponsored by the Fairhaven Lions Club, was chartered in 1953 with 30 charter members.

Today we are a club with 75 members – one of the largest clubs in the area. Our major fundraising effort is the week-long Harbor Days event at Shipyard Park in July. This event has been operating for more than 20 years, but it would not be the success it is without the support and help from the Mattapoisett community. Other fundraising events and community projects include: collecting used eyeglasses to be tagged, catalogued and shipped overseas to bring the gift of sight to those who cannot afford to buy eyeglasses; the Pennies for Sight canisters on display in many local businesses that fund eye research locally; the concession stand at the Mariners Youth Soccer League games; and aiding community residents in crisis by building handicap ramps or providing help wherever we can. The Mattapoisett Lions Club is a fine group of men and women who are community minded and who believe in reaching out to help those in need.

VALENTINA HERMOSO WINS LOCAL COMPETITION IN
LIONS INTERNATIONAL PEACE POSTER CONTEST

Valentina Hermoso, a 6th grade student at Old Hammondtown School has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Mattapoisett Lions Club.

Valentine’s poster is among more than 450,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

The poster was selected by Lions Club members Helene Rose and Debbie Bailey for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme.
“HARMONY IN HUMANITY”
Mattapoisett Lions Club President Paul Stubbs stated that he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Old Hammondtown School. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what compassion means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”

Valentina's poster will advance through the district, multiple district and international levels of competition if she is to be declared the international grand prize winner,” Stubbs said.

One international grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of US$5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to a special award ceremony. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of US$500.

“Our club is cheering for Valentina as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” Stubbs said.

Locally, Valentina and numerous other students were honored for their participation by the Mattapoisett Lions Club on Monday October 26th at Old Hammondtown School.
Valentina was awarded a $100 Barnes and Noble Gift Card.
Second place recipient Henry Kanaly was awarded a $75 Barnes and Noble gift card, third place was awarded to Rosie Palomo who received a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card and fourth place was awarded to Oliver Costa who received a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card.
Honorable mentions go out to
Lucy Poulos, Avery Klein, Corey Watlington, Hannah Beaumont, Mallan Emmons and Ana Buckner.

This weekend the Mattapoisett Lions did what the Mattapoisett Lions do, we served! One of our neighbors was in need of a ramp to gain access to their home. The club procured a ramp and installed it. We love our community. If you would like to be a part of the Lions, reach out. Some of our giving requires hammers and drills like this one. some is by being part of the decision making on the board of directors. Some includes running charity drives. Whatever your skill or interest in giving back to the local community or internationally we have a place for you!

This past weekend the Mattapoisett Lions were able to procure a wheelchair ramp and repurpose it to a new location. All of us will need some aid in our life. This is one of many ADA style ramps the Lions have been able to procure over the years for local persons with special needs.

We're still taking it all in but want to thank the whole community for coming out for Harbor Days! Hope you all had a great weekend supporting crafters, meeting with old friends, and maybe eating a strawberry shortcake!

The first annual Ten Grand in Your Hand raffle was a succuss. We awarded the ten grand last night and raised even more money to support our charities. Our charities range from local to international!

A big thanks to outgoing president Kim Ray for her leadership this year and through Harbor Days!
