Hi, I’m Jenn Christian, your Car Seat Momma

I’m a mom of three that has always been drawn to all things early childhood and child safety. I started my career as a Head Start teacher, and have dabbled in just about every field out there since - nanny and house manager, ABA therapist, therapeutic mentor, foster parent and foster parent liaison, just to name a few. In 2017 I took my collective love and became a child passenger safety technician, commonly seen as a CPST, certified by SafeKids Worldwide. For five years I volunteered my skills and knowledge helping anyone that I could with their car seat needs. The summer of 2022, as the crazy world of COVID was beginning to reopen, I listened to my friends and family and threw myself into the arms of EforAll Cape Cod and launched as an official business. Well, the paperwork just came in and we’re officially a non-profit! But that’s not all - I also just became a CPST instructor! When I’m not tightening seatbelts, you can usually find me at home with my husband, kids and our Great Dane, out exploring the natural world that Cape Cod has to offer, or eating ice cream at Smitty’s, Par-Tee Freeze, or Smugglers - your girl LOVES ice cream!

The scariest thing we saw all month? 👻 A harness you could fit a whole fist under. Do the pinch test at the collarbone, and if you can grab a fold of webbing, tighten it up! Happy Halloween from all of us, and a quick heads up: clocks fall back this Sunday, which means darker drives home. Stay safe and well-buckled out there, Cape Cod!

🎃 Wings, capes, padded suits, and props can get between your child and the harness. Buckle up in regular clothes and suit up when you get there. Trunk-or-treating? Keep kids buckled until the car is fully parked, and watch for little goblins in the lot!

Now, a little car seat nerd moment (you knew it was coming 😉): eagle-eyed followers may notice the seat in the feature photo isn't one you'll find in a US store. It's a European model, which is tested to different standards and isn't approved for use here. That's no knock on the publication. Stock photos are everywhere, and they rarely come with a CPST checking the details!
That's exactly why we do what we do. Ads, catalogs, and even baby product packaging often show seats used incorrectly. If a picture is giving you ideas, check your seat's manual or reach out to a certified technician before you copy it.

You check the date on the milk. 🥛 Do you check the date on your car seat? They expire, typically 6 to 10 years from the date of manufacture, because plastic breaks down and safety standards change. Look for a sticker or stamp on the side, back, or bottom of the seat, or check your manual. Hand-me-down or yard sale find? Check the date (and the crash history) before you use it. Not sure? 🚙 Is your big kid ready to move out of the booster? They need to pass all 5: (1) back against the seat, (2) knees bend at the edge, (3) lap belt low on the thighs, (4) shoulder belt across the collarbone, (5) able to sit that way the whole ride. Most kids aren't ready until somewhere between ages 10 and 12. It's Teen Driver Safety Week, too, and safe riding habits start early!

🧥 Cold mornings are here! After you buckle, try to pinch the harness strap at your child's collarbone. If you can grab a fold of webbing, it's too loose. And puffy coats hide that slack! Buckle up in thin layers, then add a blanket over the harness or put the coat on backward. Warm AND safe.
