Lt. Alexander Bonnyman Unit, Young Marines The Young Marines is a national youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through the completion of high school. The Lt.

The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Alexander Bonnyman Unit was established in 1997 by some motivated members of the Bonnyman Detachment of the Marine Corps League and has been going strong ever since. Our unit was named after Lt. Alexander "Sandy" Bonnyman, a Marine Officer who was killed in action during World War II. As a Combat Engineer, Lt. Bonnyman received the Medal of Honor and Purple Heart posthumously for his actions during an important assault on a Japanese bombproof shelter during the Battle of Tarawa. We are proud to carry his name.

Our unit celebrated the Young Marines birthday on Saturday, October 17. Senior Vice Commandant of the Lt. Alexander Bonnyman detachment of the Marine Corps League Keith Kregel was our guest of honor and we followed the long-held tradition of the oldest Young Marine passing a piece of the cake to the youngest. We also announced our Young Marine of the Year for 2026, YM Sergeant Jonah McCarter. He has exemplified leadership, discipline and teamwork and is deserving of this honor.

Recently our unit had a fun and challenging encampment at Montvale Springs. From basic first aid to hiking, Young Marines learned about teamwork. They demonstrated focus and discipline on the rock walls and repelled like the adventurous youth that they are. They experienced an MRE and enjoyed s’mores on the campfire. Overall, they have new memories that brings them closer as a unit.

Our Young Marines marched in the July 4th parade in Farragut, TN with the Lt. Alexander Bonnyman Marine Corps League. The crowds cheered them on and Senator Marsha Blackburn came by and met them.
After the parade and a well-deserved lunch, the unit went to the theater and watched “Young Washington” together. Fitting movie to remind them of the country’s beginnings and teach them about leadership, teamwork and discipline- the core values of the Young Marines program. Here’s to 250 years and those ahead of us as these youth take their place in history one day.
