Mark your calendars for special day August 19th! This is the official day to celebrate the Transgender Flag! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️

August is not a full month dedicated specifically to the transgender flag
, but August 19 is officially celebrated as Transgender Flag Day.
Additionally, the entire month of August is recognized in some places, such as California and San Francisco, as Transgender History Month.

Transgender Flag Facts

Creation Date: Designed on August 19, 1999, by transgender activist and Navy veteran Monica Helms.
Color Meanings: Light blue and pink represent traditional colors for boys and girls, while white represents those who are transitioning, inters*x, or non-binary.

Smithsonian Milestone: The original flag was accepted into the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History on

2 Celebrations In August! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️💜💜

Celebrated throughout the month of August in the State of California, Transgender History Month was
first legally recognized by Mayoral Proclamation in the City of San Francisco in 2021.
It is a month in which Transgender Californians honor the rich history and contributions of transgender history makers, pioneers, and trailblazers, and affirms the ongoing
presence of transgender people in San Francisco and around the world.

In 2021, activist Jupiter Peraza and
The Transgender District led the advocacy efforts to recognize the month of August as “Transgender History Month” in the City and County of San Francisco. With the support of the City and County of San Francisco’s Office of Transgender Initiatives
(OTI) and the Women’s Foundation of California, Ms. Peraza and The Transgender District advocated to the Mayor and received full support for the commemorative month.

Mayor London Breed signed and declared by proclamation, the month of August in the City and County of San Francisco as “Transgender History Month” on August 24th, 2021.
In 2023, Transgender History Month officially expanded statewide.

Help MTPC shape the future of trans equity in Massachusetts!

MTPC Working for Lived Equity: Community Needs Assessment - pledge to take the survey now!

The Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition (MTPC) is very excited to announce Working for Lived Equity (2026–2027), a statewide community needs assessment focused on the needs, priorities, strengths, and lived experiences of transgender and nonbinary people across Massachusetts.

The survey will launch in August 2026 and remain open through February 2027 with a target of 5,000 completed responses. W4LE 2026-2027 will build on the original 2019 W4LE survey and create a new public resource for the entire trans equity ecosystem in Massachusetts.

Pledge to take the survey and volunteer!
The results of this survey will provide important data and insights about the lived experiences of transgender and nonbinary people throughout Massachusetts at a time when even our communities’ most basic needs are being politicized, threatened, and persecuted.

Not only will this data guide and strengthen MTPC’s advocacy, programs, and services, but will be shared broadly to impact the work of our community partners, institutional funding priorities and strategies, leadership development and civic engagement opportunities for transgender people, and fostering affirmation and support for transgender people through the Commonwealth and beyond.

FAQs
Who is eligible to take this survey?
This survey is open to anyone living in Massachusetts who is 13 years or older and identifies as transgender, nonbinary, gender expansive, whose gender does not align with the s*x they were assigned at birth, or who has had multiple gender experiences/expressions throughout their life. We welcome participation from people with diverse gender identities, expressions, and lived experiences across the Commonwealth.

Who is creating and hosting the survey?
The survey is being developed and designed by the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition (MTPC) in collaboration with a Community Advisory Board (CAB) made up of 10 transgender and nonbinary community members who live, work, and play across Massachusetts. The project is also supported by a contracted Data Analyst with extensive experience in community-driven data analysis rooted in public health, transgender advocacy, and racial justice. This survey is for trans people, by trans people.

How will I be able to take the survey?
The survey will be published online for people to complete digitally. Printed copies of the survey will be available upon request after the survey has launched in August 2026.
