Meet Nikki Martin, MS, CCC-SLP!

We asked how Nikki became interested in working with people who stutter:

"My interest in stuttering began during my undergraduate fluency disorders course. One assignment involved voluntarily stuttering in everyday situations and reflecting on the experience. I remember carefully choosing people that I thought would be patient and approachable, and feeling disappointed and even surprised when I was interrupted and rushed. That experience stayed with me throughout my career.

I spent many years working in early intervention and public schools, supporting children and coaching parents around communication. Last year, after taking continuing education courses focused on stuttering, I felt inspired to reconnect with this area of the field in a deeper way. I opened my private practice to specialize in supporting people who stutter because I wanted to spend this stage of my career making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

I continue to learn so much from the stuttering community, and I especially value the counseling, connection, and advocacy aspects of this work."

What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering® Seal mean to Nikki?

"I chose to become a Spero Ally of Stuttering® SLP because I wanted to be part of a community of professionals dedicated to evidence-based, affirming, and compassionate support for people who stutter.

As I’ve become more involved in the stuttering community, I’ve seen how important it is for people who stutter to feel understood, supported, and respected, rather than 'treated.' Spero Stuttering is a respected organization within the stuttering community, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue learning, contributing, and advocating alongside others who care deeply about this work."

Meet Larissa Gonzalez, MS, CCC-SLP!

We asked how Larissa became interested in working with people who stutter:

"I started attending stuttering CEUs about two years ago out of personal interest and a desire to learn more. Then, I began to read research articles from the last decade. As I dug into the content, I found that research was leaning in a very different direction from what I was seeing on a routine basis in my clinical setting. The most life-changing event for me was attending the National Stuttering Association (NSA) conference in the summer of 2025. It was transformative to listen to the lived experiences of adults and youth who stutter. All of these experiences prompted a shift in my approach to stuttering services and a return to school to pursue doctoral studies focused on serving the stuttering community."

What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering® Seal mean to Larissa?

"Allyship aligns with my current understanding of the clinician's role in stuttering support."

Meet Michele West, MS, CCC-SLP!

We asked how Michele became interested in working with people who stutter:

"My grandfather stuttered severely and never knew another person who stuttered. Ever since I found out that he thought he was the only one, I had a passion to help make sure people who stutter are supported and that they know they are not alone."

What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering® Seal mean to Michele?

"As a chapter leader of the NSA Las Vegas Adult and Family chapters, I attended a Chapter Leader meeting at which a speaker involved with SPERO spoke. I wanted to become an Ally once I heard all about it."

Speech-language therapists don't just treat communication — they restore identity. 🎙️

A voice after a stroke. A child's first words. A stutter that stops holding someone back.

The sessions are slow. The progress is hard-won. The impact lasts a lifetime.

Happy National SLP Day to every therapist showing up for the moments that matter. 💙

We wrap up National Stuttering Awareness & Acceptance Week by sharing Spero's Live Q&A with authors Christopher Anderson, Chaya Goldstein-Schuff, and Naomi H. Rodgers. 😊

Are you curious about complex trauma? Participatory research? Trauma-informed therapy spaces for stuttering?

Check out their groundbreaking article, "Organizing Life Around Stuttering: A Qualitative Examination of Stuttering Through the Lens of Complex Trauma," published in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology.

This research gives voice to what many in the stuttering community have long known: that the repeated, overwhelming experiences of stuttering can leave a lasting impact on the mind, body, and relationships.

It lays critical groundwork for trauma-informed approaches in stuttering therapy and opens an important new chapter in how we understand and support people who stutter.

THANK YOU, Chris, Chaya, and Naomi, for your amazing work and this rich discussion! 🙏
