Why I Love Being a Direct Support Professional
I love being a Direct Support Professional because my work gives me a sense of purpose that is difficult to put into words. Every day, I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, and that brings me so much joy and pride.
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is watching the people I support reach their goals. When someone finally accomplishes something we have been working hard toward—and then continues to show that progress consistently—it makes my entire week. Those moments remind me that the patience, encouragement, teaching, and effort we put in together truly matter.
But what makes this work especially meaningful to me is the connection I have with my folks. No matter what may be happening in my own life, they have a way of brightening my day, making me smile, and lifting my spirits. Their happiness, personalities, accomplishments, and even the little moments we share can completely change the course of my day.
Being a DSP has taught me that making a difference doesn’t always have to be something big. Sometimes it’s helping someone accomplish a goal, celebrating a small victory, offering encouragement when they need it, or simply being there and showing someone that they are valued.
I am proud of the work I do because I know that I am not just supporting people—I am building relationships, celebrating their abilities, encouraging independence, and being part of their journey. And in so many ways, they give back to me just as much as I give to them❤️- Sara Stanley, Wasco, Inc. DSP since January 2012.
