Beef Improvement Federation Founded in 1968, BIF's mission is to help improve the industry by promoting greater acceptance of beef cattle performance evaluation.

The Beef Improvement Federation was formed as a means to standardize programs and methodologies, and to create greater awareness, acceptance and usage of performance concepts in beef production. The organization’s three-leaf clover logo would come to represent Industry, Extension and Research, just as the its annual symposium would become the industry’s premier forum bringing industry segments together to discuss and evaluate performance topics. To develop cooperation among all segments of the beef industry in the compilation and utilization of performance records to improve efficiency, profitability and sustainability of beef production.

Better genetics. Measurable progress. Greater profitability.

What does it take to build cattle that perform from pasture to plate?

At the 2026 Beef Improvement Federation Symposium, Dr. Randall Raymond of Simplot Livestock shared how disciplined genetic selection, strategic crossbreeding and performance data are driving results.

Through its integrated breeding program, Simplot has added more than $100 per calf through terminal-sire selection and improved feed efficiency while keeping consumer eating quality a priority.

The takeaway for producers? Set clear breeding goals, measure results and be willing to adjust.

Country Natural Beef’s retained-ownership data showed that while feed conversion declined as days on feed increased, heavier carcasses ultimately created more value for member ranches.

An additional 125 pounds of average carcass weight generated approximately $395 more per head in return to the ranch after feeding costs.

At the 2026 Beef Improvement Federation Symposium, Country Natural Beef CEO Tylor Braden shared what the cooperative has learned by following cattle all the way from the ranch to harvest — and how management can help cattle express the genetic potential already there.

The beef industry has made remarkable genetic progress over the past several decades, but where will the next breakthrough come from?

Ronnie Green, Ph.D., says research investment will play a crucial role.

Speaking at the 2026 BIF Research Symposium and Convention, he highlighted how publicly funded research has helped advance everything from crossbreeding and heterosis to genetic evaluation, efficiency and productivity. Now, as U.S. agricultural research investment stagnates, he says beef industry representatives need to become stronger advocates for the research that supports producers’ bottom lines.

Despite historically high retail prices, consumers continue to invest in beef—particularly the quality products that deliver the eating experience they expect.

At the 2026 BIF Symposium, Dave Weaber of Terrain called what’s happening in the beef business “transformational from an economic standpoint.”

From growing demand for Choice and Prime to the important role of ground beef, today’s consumer sends a strong signal throughout the beef value chain.
