Demeaning, dismissing, and belittling women is a normal part of patriarchy, and therefore standard in women’s interactions with men. Yet because patriarchy socializes women to over-value men and devalue themselves, we often don’t even notice the subtle ways men seek dominance in their interactions. For this reason, patriarchal abuse can seem to come out of nowhere.

It never does.

He didn’t go from nice to abusive. He slowly applied whatever tactics he could to get what he wanted, and when they usual patriarchal script failed, he escalated. In romantic relationships, at work, at school, and everywhere else women interact with men, men subtly undermine women. It can make you feel crazy, like there’s something wrong with you, like you’re fundamentally unreliable and unreasonable.

You’re not. Patriarchy is.

Here are the most common tactics men use to undermine women. These tactics are subtle, and bystanders may never notice them. Even when you notice, men will claim ignorance. The plausible deniability is what makes these tactics so effective. But once you know them, you’ll never ignore them again.
