Despite how often television portrays it, rigor mortis isn’t precise enough to tell you exactly when someone died. Its timing is affected by so many variables that forensic professionals use it alongside other postmortem findings to determine probable time of death.

So what does this mean for a funeral home?

We are excited to welcome a few new volunteer guest bloggers to the Home Funeral Alliance conversation! One of the things we value most about this community is the willingness to share experiences, ideas, resources, and different perspectives about home funerals and community deathcare.

Today, we’re delighted to share the first article from one of our new volunteer guest writers. In this thoughtful review, Jennifer Cullinane takes a close look at Jane K. Callahan’s A Death Doula’s Guide to a Meaningful End and consider what the book has to offer families, caregivers, and those interested in community-based deathcare.

Meet our Board Member, Fawn Hendricks!

Fawn’s calling to death care began in childhood, when she found herself naturally drawn to caring for those who had died. That calling led her toward mortuary science, but her experience with the conventional funeral industry made it clear that the way death is commonly handled in America did not reflect the values she wanted to live by. She carried that desire to care for others into a clinical career spanning family practice, post-anesthesia care, and the operating room, deepening her understanding of the human body and the transitions surrounding illness, recovery, and death.

Everything changed when she discovered the green burial movement. She found in it a vision of death care that felt more honest, personal, ecological, and connected to community. One that recognized families as capable participants in the care of their own loved ones.

Today, Fawn serves full time on the board of directors at Glendale Memorial Nature Preserve in Northwest Florida, where her work encompasses home funeral guidance, community education, green burial, and pan-death care advocacy. She is also a full-time homesteader, spending much of her time tending to her animals, family, and the land through hands-on conservation and stewardship projects.

Beyond direct death-care education, Fawn is an advocate for meaningful reform in end-of-life law and policy, working to expand public understanding and access to alternative disposition methods, family-directed death care, and greater autonomy in end-of-life decision-making. She is passionate about helping people understand that they have more choices at the end of life than they are aware of, and those choices should be protected, accessible, and guided by the values of the individual and their family.
