Cornell Cooperative Extension Associations and the New York City office provide 56 portals to Cornell University.

The nationwide network of Cooperative Extension programs began in 1914 as a means of applying land-grant university research in understandable and useful ways to farmers and rural families. Today, Cooperative Extension serves urban, suburban, town and rural areas by offering programs in five broad areas: Agriculture & Food Systems; Children, Youth, & Families; Community & Economic Vitality; Environment & Natural Resources; and Nutrition & Health. Cornell Cooperative Extension operates on the Cornell campus through the leadership of faculty and staff in departments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Human Ecology, with contributions from the College of Veterinary Medicine. Extension educators in these locations form powerful community-university partnerships with the Cornell campus, and involve local constituents to address the issues and concerns of New Yorkers.

Today Amy went to Franklin Academy and worked with some of the 9-12 graders today. They learned about how pumpkins grow and did some Halloween crafts.

Dairy in the Classroom with Amy!

7th & 8th grade BMC students in Mr. Barney's Tech class and Mrs. Roberts' Family & Consumer Sciences classes were fortunate to have Amy Shipman, Agricultural Education Specialist- Dairy in the Classroom Educator from Cornell Cooperative Extension come in for a lesson on Food Insecurity. Our students learned that food insecurity means not having enough money to buy food and that 1 in 5 children struggle with food insecurity in the U.S. To help combat this crisis in our area, the students learned that BMC takes part in a Universal Breakfast and Lunch program which provides free breakfast and lunch for all of our students! Locally, we also have some fantastic food pantries in our area that help families in need.

Thank you to everyone that came out to the Joint Annual Meeting with Franklin County Farm Bureau! This was a wonderful night of community and togetherness, which was tied together beautifully by our Keynote speaker Sarah Lister.

We are sad to say goodbye to three of our board members whose terms will end at the New Year, Connie Gerow, Kevin Leahy and Rebecca Preve, we wish them well in their next endeavor!

We also would like to congratulate those who received our Friends of 4-H, Friends of Camp Overlook and Friends of the Association.

This past weekend was the Annual Fall 4-H Fun Horse Play Day and Family Picnic, 4-H'ers aged 5-18 competed in obstacle races, egg and spoon and barrel races. There were 20 horses, 7 mini horses, and 2 ponies. Then to close down the 4-H program season the parents, leader and 4-H'ers enjoyed a picnic!

Last week our Master Food Preservation instructor Pat Banker taught a canning workshop using science based USDA methods! Participants made beef and venison jerky, canned vegetables, canned meats and soups. They learned how to use a rocker gauge and a dial gauge pressure canner.

Brushton-Moira Central School District 2nd graders had the opportunity to go to Bilow Farms, LLC to see how a dairy farm operates, and see the calves that they adopted as a class! They got to see everything from the rotary milker parlor to where the milk is loaded into the trucks.
