More than a decade of partnership, a deeply rooted mission, and a commitment to the Madison community; University Book Store continues to show up in the fight against cancer in a meaningful way.

We reached out to Kim Fredrickson and Kendra Buchanan regarding University Book Store's support for Coaches vs. Cancer.

🎗️ What originally drew your company to this mission?
University Book Store’s connection to Coaches vs. Cancer began more than a decade ago when our president was invited to serve on the Coaches vs. Cancer Board of Ambassadors and asked Kim Fredrickson, our Vice President of Finance, to get involved as well.

For Kim, the opportunity was deeply personal. Just a few years earlier, she had lost her son, Jared, to cancer. Getting involved felt like a way to take something incredibly difficult and turn it into something that could help other families, including those within the UW–Madison community.

That moment shaped how we approach this partnership. Supporting Coaches vs. Cancer isn’t just something we do; it’s something rooted in personal experience and a genuine desire to make a difference for the community we serve.

❤️ How does supporting the American Cancer Society align with your values or culture?
Supporting the American Cancer Society aligns closely with who we are as a local, community-focused organization and as a proud partner of the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Cancer has touched the lives of our employees, their families, and the broader campus community, so this is not a distant issue for us. It’s something we see and feel. We also care deeply about our local community here in Madison, including places like the Carbone Cancer Center.

🫶 Are there any personal stories that have strengthened your commitment?
Over the years, members of our team and the UW–Madison community we serve have faced cancer in different ways, whether through their own personal battles, supporting loved ones, or experiencing loss. Those experiences have only deepened our commitment.

Kim’s story continues to be at the heart of that. She has become the driving force behind our involvement with Coaches vs. Cancer. Her leadership has helped keep this cause front and center within our organization and serves as a constant reminder of why this work matters.

🛤️ Why is it important to continue long-term partnerships like this?
For the University Book Store, continuing this partnership is about being part of that long-term effort. We all want to see a future where cancer is either cured or managed as a chronic disease, and we believe showing up consistently is one way we can help move that forward.
