🏆 2026 WI SHRM Lifetime Leader Award – In Memoriam 🏆

The Lifetime Leader Award recognizes outstanding achievement in Human Resource Management and honors longtime SHRM leaders whose dedication, service, and leadership have made a lasting impact on our profession.

This year, we are doing something a little different.

It is with deep respect and gratitude that we posthumously honor Tony Renning with the WI SHRM Lifetime Leader Award – In Memoriam. 💙

Tony was a founding member of the Oshkosh Area SHRM chapter and served on its board from the chapter’s inception until his passing in 2024. Throughout his years of service, Tony was always willing to step in wherever he was needed.

His commitment to SHRM and the HR profession extended far beyond his local chapter. Tony served on the WI SHRM State Council and was a trusted attorney, advocate, mentor, and resource to employers and HR professionals throughout his career.

Nationally recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America for Labor Law, Tony brought integrity, wisdom, compassion, and a genuine commitment to helping others to everything he did.

Tony’s legacy lives on through the chapter he helped build, the HR professionals he supported, and the countless people who benefited from his knowledge and leadership.

Chad Wade accepted the award on Tony’s behalf as we honored a remarkable leader whose impact on the Wisconsin HR community will not be forgotten.

Please join us in remembering Tony and celebrating his extraordinary legacy of service. 💙

After four years of attending the WI SHRM State Conference, here are my tips:

1️⃣Prepare - There are so many amazing sessions offered at this conference, and it’s hard to pick just one for each time slot. Take some time to consider what you need to learn for yourself and your career and what your organization needs you to learn and bring back. That will help you evaluate which sessions to go to and which ones you may need to skip.

2️⃣Pack – Bring comfortable walking shoes and a water bottle. The Kalahari is not a small facility, and a water bottle makes staying hydrated more convenient!

3️⃣Connect – The best connections often happen in the hallway, expo hall, during meals, or the small group discussions during breakout sessions. If you’re with a large group from your chapter or work, consider splitting up into multiple tables at large sessions so you can all connect with someone new.

My final tip is to HAVE FUN! I can’t wait to see you all in October at the 2026 WI SHRM State Conference.

Is anyone else the type of person who says “yes” to virtually everything, but your time has become a valuable commodity that you can’t give as freely as you once did?

With potential new volunteer opportunities, I evaluate based on three considerations on my “volunteer compass” to help guide me to make the best decision:

1️⃣ Connection – Who will I meet and what relationships could I build?

2️⃣ Impact – What difference could I make?

3️⃣ Growth – What skill could I develop or strengthen?

I’ve loved having the opportunity to serve on the SMILE Team for the last few years, and it meets my criteria.

✔️I have the opportunity to connect with speakers, vendors, and HR professionals from throughout the state.

✔️ I’m able to provide some small insights through these takeover posts that may have an impact on someone’s life, and I can help provide information about the upcoming conference through various interviews and posts.

✔️ This also helps develop my social media skills for my regular career and other volunteer opportunities I pursue.

If you’re considering joining the SMILE team next year, send me a message or find me at the conference so I can give you more details!

I was chatting with a few people at a conference a couple of years ago about our "superpowers" as part of a small group discussion during a presentation. I could not think of a superpower for myself (cue imposter syndrome discussion). A friend told me she thought my superpower was connection. I took the complement and really reflected on what that meant.

To me, it means I have a talent for making people feel like they belong and understanding how people, ideas, and opportunities can come together. I feel this is important in not only the human resources work I do, but also the work I do in local government.

What’s your superpower? I’d love to hear about it. Drop your superpower in the comments below.

👋Hello! I’m Inga Cushman, and this is my third year serving on the SMILE Team!

Here's a little bit about me:

🔹 I obtained my SHRM-SCP in 2021.

🔹 I just hit my three-year anniversary with the Village of Cottage Grove last week. I previously worked for the City of Milton for 16 years.

🔹 My husband, Kayne, is my in-house IT consultant and works professionally in cyber security.

🔹 My two kiddos, Gwen and Diana, are active in a variety of sports and activities. Gwen’s focus right now is hockey and soccer, and Diana loves swim and dance.

🔹 I serve on the Janesville Youth Hockey Board. Fun fact: Janesville has grown from about 15 girls registered when Gwen started in 2021 to over 85 in the 2025-2026 season.

I hope you enjoy the content I put together for you today! Make sure to connect with me on LinkedIn or follow me on Instagram.

🏆 Congratulations to the 2026 WI SHRM Rising Leader Award Recipient!

The Rising Leader Award recognizes an emerging chapter leader who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, and commitment to their local chapter, WI SHRM, and the greater SHRM community.

This year’s recipient has already made a lasting impact through her dedication to connection, service, and community outreach.

As Director of Volunteer Engagement, she revitalized programs that helped members connect, learn, and serve. Later, as Director of Workforce Readiness, she built meaningful partnerships that opened doors for job seekers and strengthened outreach to marginalized communities.

Now, as she steps into her new role as Vice President of Community Outreach, she continues to lead with vision, compassion, and purpose.

Please join us in congratulating Ambar Sanchez of GMA SHRM, our 2026 Rising Leader Award recipient! 🎉👏

Thank you, Ambar, for your commitment to the HR profession, your community, and the future of SHRM leadership!
